Roles & Responsibilities

The role is central to the management and marketing of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s arbitration practice in Asia, spanning active case work (focused, though not exclusively, on trial management), knowledge management, financials and business development.


Case management and billable work:

  • Logistical planning and coordination of arbitral hearings (including around-the-clock dedicated support to the team and clients in the lead up to, and during, hearings).
  • Providing value-add billable legal support to the Asia international arbitration group, and supervising basic billable legal tasks undertaken by the Freshfields Hub.
  • Document management, including maintenance of a shared drive, to be handled primarily by the Hub team under incumbent’s supervision.
  • The heavy lifting for submission filings and management of exhibits, etc to be undertaken by the Hub under incumbent’s supervision.

Practice management:

  • Coordinating day-to-day administrative functions of the Asia international arbitration group, including client billing, workflow management, engagement letters and review of time recording.
  • Maintaining regional matter and filing calendars for the wider Asia Dispute Resolution team, including upcoming business development events and conference presentations.
  • Acting as liaison for Asia DR on legal tech and innovation, including driving forward development (with the Legal Services Innovation Team) of new tech-enabled solutions, and coordinating and delivering training to the Asia DR team.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships, and acting as liaison with, leading regional and global arbitral institutions and organisations.
  • From time to time, working as client liaison with key clients in relation to matter service satisfaction and relationship development.
  • Working with Asia DR fee earners to assess needs during the lifetime of a matter, in particular the constitution of Hub support teams and other support services.

Knowledge:

  • Providing knowledge and precedent management services to the Asia international arbitration group.
  • Working with the global international arbitration group Knowledge team on global knowledge initiatives and projects, including client briefings and brochures.
  • Training and development coordinator for the Asia international arbitration group, including facilitating the firm’s advocacy training course.
  • Creating and maintaining global knowledge databases, including arbitration experience tables, arbitrator appointment database and confidential awards database.
  • Providing skills training to the Asia DR team, including matter management and trial / hearing preparation.
  • Developing and maintaining expert knowledge of leading arbitral rules.

Business Development:

  • Working with the Asia DR BD team and the Asia Pitch Centre to prepare pitches and capability statements for current and potential DR clients, with a focus on conducting detailed reviews of drafts and providing value-add content.
  • Coordinating league table submissions, including to GAR and Chambers.
  • Working with Freshfields’ dedicated business development team to manage client events, publications and initiatives, in particular the production of legal content for same.
  • Providing support to senior business development team members in Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong on client relationship development, including being involved in meetings with senior fee earners and assisting with the identification of target clients and finding ways to work with them.

Essential Requirements

  • Material substantive disputes experience, managing large-scale, high-profile arbitrations, covering both commercial and investment cases, in Asia, Europe and the Americas
  • Substantial experience working with advocates in planning and managing trial logistics at venues in Asia and Europe
  • Substantial degree of technical knowledge of the Asia disputes market, including awareness of, and keen interest in, developments, trends and opportunities, with knowledge of and experience in Northeast, Southeast and South Asian matters
  • Experience managing case financial matters (including building Excel models for case financial performance) and communicating with clients on estimates, progress and billing
  • Sharp attention to detail and extremely strong organisational skills
  • Strong, clear written and spoken English and ability to adjust written style across a range of products, including pitches and internal strategy papers
  • Good knowledge of and ongoing working relationships with key service providers, including court reporters, hearing venues, interpreters and translators, in (at least) Asia and Europe
  • Working knowledge of key soft law instruments relevant to appointment of arbitrators, including, in particular, the IBA Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest in International Arbitration
  • Experience managing multi-jurisdictional training for lawyers, especially advocacy-related training
  • Familiarity with legal tech developments and experience training lawyers on legal tech
  • Qualification as a lawyer and some experience in practice as a lawyer
  • Experience in law firm (and especially disputes) business development
  • Experience working with and managing a global team
  • Willingness to travel
