Job Purpose

As a key member of the BBC's Business and Legal Affairs team, you will provide critical support to the Head of Business and Legal Affairs and regional business teams in Asia, with a focus on North East Asia (Japan and Korea) revenue businesses and Asia Marketing. Your expertise will be essential in delivering high-quality business and legal affairs support on matters of strategic, financial, and reputational importance to the BBC's business.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Negotiation and Contracting: You will draft, negotiate, review, and conclude complex contracts and other legal documentation, ensuring the BBC's interests are protected and risks are mitigated.
  • Advising: You will provide accurate, timely, and commercially focused legal advice to clients, helping them navigate complex issues and make informed decisions.
  • Stakeholder Management: You will represent the BBC and foster effective relationships with external and internal stakeholders, ensuring the BBC's reputation is maintained and enhanced.
  • Risk Management: You will identify and mitigate legal, contractual, and business risks, resolving disputes and protecting the BBC's interests.
  • Compliance: You will ensure the BBC's policies and procedures are adhered to, and relevant legislation and regulation are complied with.
  • Market Intelligence and Knowledge Management: You will stay up-to-date with global market trends, supporting the development of the BBC's business and legal affairs strategies.
  • Teamwork: You will contribute to the development of high-performing teams, promoting a culture of integrity, empowerment, and collaboration.
  • Project Management: You will lead or assist on complex projects, ensuring effective delivery and resource utilization.
Knowledge, Skills, Training, and Experience
  • 3-5 years of post-qualification experience in a private practice law firm or MNC in-house environment, preferably in the TMT sector.
  • Extensive negotiating, rights management, and contracting experience.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the issues affecting the BBC and the media industry.
  • A track record of providing proactive, specialist, timely, and authoritative legal advice and support to senior leaders and key decision-makers.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clarify complex issues and concepts for non-lawyers.
  • Ability to work supportively as a team member and build and manage relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to manage diverse workstreams and apply complex analytical and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Shows initiative, commitment, and flexibility when faced with obstacles.
  • Motivated to develop themselves and contribute to knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Experience of managing risk and delivering projects in a complex environment.
  • Builds and maintains team standards of high performance and professionalism.
Desirable
  • In-depth knowledge of, and experience in, the broadcast, production, or digital media sector.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current market intelligence and global media trends.
  • Understanding of the structures and systems within which broadcasters, producers, distributors operate.
  • Knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework, particularly in the region within which the business operates.
