Position Summary We are seeking a commercially astute and operationally grounded Head of Vessel Chartering to lead our chartering team and strategy across the Meratus fleet. This role is pivotal in optimizing vessel utilization, managing chartering agreements, and ensuring alignment between commercial demand and fleet capacity . The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in vessel chartering (both time and voyage charters) with a strong understanding of regional trade dynamics, vessel economics, and stakeholder negotiation . You will collaborate closely with Fleet Operations, Commercial, and Finance teams to ensure our chartering decisions support profitability, flexibility, and long-term growth . Key Responsibilities Lead the development and execution of Meratus’ vessel chartering strategy, balancing owned, chartered, and third-party tonnage to meet operational and commercial needs. Negotiate and manage time charter, voyage charter agreements with domestic and international partners. Monitor market trends, freight rates, and vessel availability to inform chartering decisions and risk mitigation. Fleet Optimization & Commercial Alignment Work closely with Fleet Planning and Commercial teams to match vessel capacity with cargo demand across trade lanes. Ensure optimal vessel deployment, utilization, and turnaround to maximize revenue and minimize idle time. Support new route development and seasonal capacity planning through strategic chartering solutions. Stakeholder Management & Compliance Build and maintain strong relationships with charterers, shipowners, brokers, agents, and regulatory bodies. Ensure chartering contracts are compliant with legal, financial, and operational standards. Collaborate with Legal and Finance teams to manage charter party terms, claims, and settlements. Leadership & Team Development Lead a team of chartering professionals, fostering a high-performance culture focused on agility, accountability, and continuous improvement. Provide mentorship, training, and career development pathways for junior chartering staff. Contribute to cross-functional leadership forums and strategic planning initiatives. Candidate Profile Experience & Expertise Minimum 10 years of experience in vessel chartering or maritime commercial operations. Proven success in negotiating and managing chartering agreements across container, bulk, or multipurpose vessels. Strong understanding of Southeast Asian trade routes, port operations, and vessel economics. Prior leadership experience in a fleet or commercial function within a shipping or logistics organization. Education & Credentials Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping Management, Business, or a related field. Professional certifications in chartering, shipping law, or marine operations are advantageous. Skills & Attributes Strategic thinker with strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities. Proficiency in chartering platforms, vessel tracking tools, and contract management systems.
