**What the role is**
Environmental sustainability has underpinned Singapore’s policymaking since our independence. As a small city state with limited natural resources, we had to protect our environment. As early as the 1970s, we started putting in place policies to do so by managing pollution and conserving our water resources. Today, Singapore is widely recognised as a green and sustainable city state, and Singaporeans enjoy clean air, water and environment. Environmental sustainability remains a key priority for the government. In 2021 alone, we launched new policies and initiatives such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the GreenGov.SG movement and the SG Eco Fund to advance Singapore’s efforts in environmental sustainability and climate action.
The Environmental Policy Division (EPD) evaluates, reviews, and formulates environmental and sustainability policies and strategies. This spans a broad range of areas including Singapore Green Plan 2030, GreenGov.SG movement, SG Eco Fund, environmental protection, zero waste, circular economy, environmental public health, and hawker policies.
As part of the Public Sector Sustainability Office, you will spearhead policy formulation and implementation to advance Singapore’s efforts in environmental sustainability.
**What you will be working on**
- Develop Singapore’s national environmental sustainability goals, policies and strategies, through careful consideration of synergies and trade-offs, and by pushing the boundaries on what is possible;
- Drive the implementation of sustainability policies and programmes across whole-of-Government by working and coordinating with other Ministries and agencies;
- Continually review the national sustainability agenda so that it is relevant and ambitious, by identifying gaps and taking in perspectives, such as from international benchmarks and stakeholder engagements;
- Formulate programmes and strategies to entrench sustainability within public service organisations, in areas such as green public procurement, sustainability reporting and disclosure, and capability building;
**What we are looking for**
- Strong analytical skills. You are able to take an issue, dissect it to identify the specific problems, and develop considered solutions to those problems.
- Strong synthesis skills. You are able to draw connections between a range of seemingly disparate issues, and frame those issues coherently in a logical way.
- Strong communication skills, both in writing and speaking. You are able to be succinct and targeted, by raising only the most pertinent points. You are also able to express your points in a logical fashion, where one issue is intuitively related to the next.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. You are comfortable with engaging stakeholders, and resourceful in coming up with different solutions to overcome challenges.
- Strong interagency coordination skills. You are able to effectively manage interagency dynamics, build trust with stakeholders from different agencies, understand and rationalise agencies’ viewpoints and present them coherently, and work together to find common ground and advance shared objectives.
This last criterion is the most important. You do not need to have background in policy or strategic planning, although that is helpful. We will help you to develop the skills you need to do the job well, but you have to want to do so.
