Deputy Head of Department, Workshop

**Our client is test laboratory specializing in fast, reliable and accurate testing of metal. They offer a comprehensive selection of tests and inspection services including mechanical tests, chemical and metallographic analysis, corrosion tests, non-destructive tests, welding consultancy & welding inspection, failure analysis, etc.**

**SUMMARY OF JOB CONTENTS**

**The goal of this role focuses largely on people management. The incumbent is to ensure the smooth and safe running of a workshop to cut and machine customers' samples in order for the respective Test Departments to perform the necessary testing(s).**

**JOB DIMENSION (SCOPE)**

**Operational/ Leadership Tasks**
- Oversee the operations in the workshop
- Guide, support and follow up with team members during the execution of their tasks with regard to quantity and quality.
- Oversee that all team members are carrying out their work according to the defined SOPs
- Oversee that all samples, specimens and leftovers retain its traceability IDs, were labelled and stored in the designated locations
- Oversee that there is sufficient tooling or equipment available for workshop operations
- Supervise on the proper disposal of scrap metal
- Supervise maintenance and cleaning were carried out according to schedule and required standards at all times by the team
- Think along about and make continuous improvement on processes and the day-to-day operation of the team:
**Administrative Tasks**
- Write workshop SOPs and to ensure consistency in departmental operations
- Plan, organize & structure the work & optimise manpower resources in the workshop
- Assist HOD in the annual budgetary planning for workshop expenses / inventory, & keep close tracking of actual expenditure against allocated budget.

**Learning & Development Tasks**
- Responsible for coaching and motivating your team members in terms of both skills required to perform their work and soft skills and also play a role model
- Be the Change Agent to communicate and execute continuous improvement projects within your department using the feedback from other department
- Oversee team members' status of technical competences
- Write up and review the adequacy of current training syllabus. Propose plans to fill the identified gaps.
- Continuous personal development, both in terms of knowledge of the own field and in terms of managerial skills, in order to strengthen your leadership credibility.

**People Management**
- Conduct Performance Feedback Dialogue with team members on a continuous basis
- Constructively communicate and develop good collaboration with other departments, so that a positive work culture and smooth information flow is guaranteed.

**Health & Safety**
- Ensure compliance with the Workplace Safety and Health policies at all times as well as the quality of work perform.

**Quality Assurance**
- Ensure the compliances of accredited laboratory to SAC-SINGLAS technical and quality requirements
- Review existing work flows and procedure and make recommendations for improvements and executing improvement plans.
- Make proposal to HOD on new SOPs that deem fit.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- At least 5 years of experience in managing workshop operations and operating machines
- Proven ability to lead, manage and inspire a team
- Diploma in Precision or Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design or any related industries/fields
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, formulate production routes and process plans
- Familiarity with machining processes (milling, turning, and wire EDM operations) will be an added advantage
- Familiar with metal processing techniques such as welding, sample cutting, sample processing, heat treatment.
- Demonstrated abilities to work collaboratively across the organization
- Basic IT Skills - MS Office
