Job Description:

The Marine Operations Director will oversee all QHSSE & marine operations of the managed fleet, ensuring compliance with international maritime rules and regulations. This position involves managing navigational safety, risk management, incident investigation, and crew performance.


Responsibilities:
  • Ensure full compliance with ISM, ISPS, MLC, SOLAS, MARPOL and other statutory and classification requirements for all managed vessels.
  • Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS) across the fleet.
  • Monitor navigational practices, cargo operations, safety drills, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Supervise marine superintendents and other shore-based marine personnel, providing guidance and support.
  • Coordinate with vessel masters for safe and efficient operations, addressing operational concerns proactively.
  • Lead shipboard safety culture initiatives and ensure continuous improvement in safety KPIs.
  • Conduct vessel inspections, internal audits, and pre-vetting preparations where applicable.
  • Collaborate with Technical, Crewing, and Commercial & Operation departments to align operations with business goals.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action planning for non-conformities, accidents, and near misses.
  • Ensure timely execution of Port State Control and Flag State inspections, vetting, and regulatory surveys and the follow up.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and changing regulations (e.g., EEXI, CII, ballast water treatment rules) and ensure compliance readiness.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (Unlimited), with command experience on ocean-going vessels, preferably container vessels.
  • Minimum 15 years' experience in QHSSE & marine operations, including at least 3 years in a senior management role within a ship management or owner organization.
  • In-depth understanding of international maritime rules & regulations, shipboard operations, and audit protocols.
  • DPA, CSO certified, internal auditor certified.
  • Proven experience managing navigational safety, risk management, incident investigation and crew performance.
  • Experience interfacing with Flag States, Class Societies, PSC, and Vetting Inspectors.

Preferred Skills:
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and crisis management skills.
  • Familiarity with digital safety tools, risk assessment systems, and e-navigation technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead cross-cultural ship and shore teams.
