Position Title: Manager, Global Volunteer Management

Location: Headquarters - Washington, DC, Cairo, Panama City. Johannesburg, Dublin, or Singapore

Department: Special Olympics Leadership and Organizational Development (L&OD)

Reports to: Director, Leadership and Organizational Development

Position Summary:

This position will oversee global volunteer development and engagement work, with primary responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Be a subject matter expert on volunteer trends, approaches, and solutions, within Special Olympics and across the nonprofit sector.
  • Work collaboratively to develop a holistic global volunteer leadership strategy, addressing all key aspects of volunteer management (needs assessment, strategic recruitment, safeguarding measures and compliance, professional development, ongoing education, standards, event operations, retention, recognition, renewal/transition, and more).
  • Use design thinking approach in developing volunteer engagement models and strategies to collect, define and factor in the end user needs.
  • Monitor, evaluate outcomes, and recommend adjustments to the strategy on an ongoing basis. Forecast potential development that suit community culture and volunteer vision, rapid changes, and trends in volunteering.
  • Lead the support to organizing committees of SOI-conducted World Games and international competitions in volunteer recruitment, management, services & training as well as the inclusion of volunteers with intellectual disabilities.
  • Collaborate with applicable departments to support volunteer development efforts (examples: Local Program development, coach development, committee, and board enhancement).
  • Collaborate with global Programs, SOI Regions and Departments to identify volunteer groups and help foster greater standards, continuity, consistency, impact, and quality of the volunteer experience across global Programs, for all types of volunteers, but primarily focusing on general volunteers (e.g., day-of event volunteers, local management teams, games and event management teams, chaperones, interns, Athlete and Youth Leadership mentors, Law Enforcement Torch Run).
  • Lead technical assistance, training, and consultations to educate, equip, empower regional staffs to advance the consistency, growth, quality, and sustainability of Program volunteer leadership work in their respective Regions. Identify and provide relevant resources and products.
  • Facilitate the sharing of knowledge, leading practices, and centers of excellence across global Programs.
  • Establish and lead global volunteer management advisory committee.
  • Support creation, translation, and regional adaptation of volunteer resources and training materials in both print and e-learning formats.
  • Manage and develop strategic partnerships with for-profit organizations and related professional organizations for identifying volunteers to support global Programs.
  • Work directly with Development team to provide subject matter expertise needed to secure funding specifically for volunteer management.
  • Collaborate with Communications team to curate global volunteer engagement stories and multimedia content to be shared internally and externally.
  • Identify and support technology-based solutions to further volunteer-related initiatives. Serve as SOI’s liaison regarding any Special Olympics created/curated volunteer management software system(s).
  • Other duties as assigned, duties subject to change.

Required Qualifications/Traits:

  • 5+ years of professional experience with a state/provincial, national, or international multi-tiered/federated model non-profit or for-profit organization.
  • Experience leading strategic volunteer engagement / management.
  • High commitment to superior customer service and quality.
  • Innovative, adaptable, solutions-oriented.
  • Flexible and comfortable working in a high-productivity environment with changing priorities, initiatives, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to identify organizational needs and operationalize solutions.

  • Ability to determine nuances of situations and craft tailored solutions/approaches accordingly.

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings, and meet travel expectations, as needed.
  • Proficient computer skills (common software including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant related educational equivalent(s), or equivalent experience.

Preferable Qualifications/Traits:

  • Current understanding of Special Olympics Programs, programming, culture, structure, and SOI initiatives preferred.
  • First-hand Special Olympics or other non-profit volunteer experience.
  • Experience managing, motivating and leading staff and volunteers to reach common goals.
  • Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Comfortable working in a multi-cultural and international operating environment
  • Professional and/or personal experience working with individuals with intellectual disability.
  • Experience with safeguarding and/or risk management.
  • Knowledge of SmartSheets, Microsoft Teams, Power Bi.
