Environmental Compliance Specialist

**Duties**:
**This series covers positions managing, supervising, leading, and/or performing administrative and management work.**

**s a **Environmental Compliance Specialist** you may**:

- Evaluate environmental compliance, protection, and surveillance programs for adequacy and effectiveness in meeting legal, regulatory, and programmatic requirements.
- Ensure authority and accountability of managers for meeting environmental requirements, positive controls are in place, conduct of operations fully address environmental impact and effective quality assurance measures.
- Identify environmental program vulnerabilities and their root causes, determine adequacy of corrective actions taken to address identified problems, and recommend new approaches to achieve full compliance.
- Lead comprehensive compliance reviews and other EPA regulations as well as state and local regulations.
- Develop violation mitigation strategies and prepare and negotiate settlements with state, local, and federal agencies.
- Provide guidance and oversight to ensure evaluations are conducted for proposed actions; liaison with federal, state, local authorities, and the public on matters affecting environmental protection and public health and safety issues.

**Qualifications**:
**You must meet the Basic Education Requirement listed in the "Education Requirements" section and the "Specialized Experience" to qualify for this series as described below.**
- Evaluating environmental compliance, protection, and surveillance programs for adequacy and effectiveness in meeting legal, regulatory, and programmatic requirements AND
- Identifying environmental program vulnerabilities and their root causes, and determining adequacy of corrective actions AND
- Providing technical assistance or recommendations about environmental engineering or natural resources management policy to a variety of personnel.

NOTE: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at the GS-14 level.
- "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

**Education**:

**Basic Education Requirement**:

- **Degree**: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
