Knowledge Broker

**Who are we?**

We are the University of Cambridge research centre in Singapore called Cambridge CARES, sponsored by the

NRF CREATE program CAM.CREATE. Health-driven design for cities (HD4) is a collaborative research programme

between the University of Cambridge, Nanyang Technological University and National University Singapore within

Cambridge CARES. HD4 will deliver highly actionable data and evidence on the social determinants of health in Singapore,

which have the potential to improve the public’s health.

HD4 is motivated by the rising burden of non-communicable diseases on individuals and wider society in

Singapore. HD4 will study the relationship between the environment, health behaviours and health outcomes,

identifying and addressing key risk factors to understand and influence the upstream determinants of health

in Singapore. It will exploit a unique opportunity to work synergistically with the SG100K cohort study,

augmenting it with data characterizing the individual environmental exposures of the cohort participants.

Overall, the HD4 project has the potential to identify how Singapore can be developed to optimize health and

be a research-driven exemplar for other Asian cities. However, research impact will be achieved via active

knowledge exchange and co-creation with stakeholders, and innovative means of communication with

stakeholders that are not typically exploited by researchers. HD4 will use a co-creation approach to work with

government agencies to maximize the value of our science, both in terms of what we do and how we share

what we find. This is critical to ensuring that the tools and public health models that the project develops are

influential in translating research into action. We will also harness the potential of online, interactive data

visualization tools to share our data and evidence in ways that maximize engagement.

**Who are we looking for?**

CARES is offering an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant research group, giving you the opportunity to

contribute to this applied research project of direct relevance to government policy and public health. To

maximize HD4s potential for real-world impact, we are seeking to appoint a Knowledge Broker to develop and

lead the project’s communications and knowledge exchange strategy. You will also have a proven track record

of mapping, engaging and managing non-academic stakeholder input into academic research. A further strategic

focus is to take communications activities beyond traditional means. You will have a keen interest in innovative

methods for dissemination of academic knowledge into policy and practice including through use of interactive,

online data visualization tools. You may already have some experience of website user interface design theory

(or a willingness to learn), but you are not expected to build any tool(s).

The postholder will work with HD4 scientists to develop strategies to promote knowledge exchange between

researchers and multiple audiences and stakeholders including policymakers, practitioners, members of NGOs,

journalists and the public. The goal is to ensure that the evidence and outputs of HD4 are available in forms that

are accessible, useful and have the potential for real world impact. You will be responsible for monitoring the

success of these knowledge exchange approaches and adapting them accordingly.

**Key Responsibilities**:
A key task will be building relationships and maintaining two-way and collaborative engagement with non
- academic stakeholders in Singapore’s various government agencies and ministries, including through

management of advisory groups, having carefully mapped stakeholder membership. You will help HD4 develop

understanding of stakeholder needs and facilitate stakeholder support for the project. You will support this work

by developing a program of regional activities (e.g. workshops, seminars).

The interpersonal elements of your work will be coupled with your use and knowledge of traditional, social and

other digital media. You will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the HD4 website and will

work with communications colleagues and researchers to use press releases and media as part of dissemination

plans, as well as developing social media strategy appropriate for the audiences and context of HD4. You will

facilitate knowledge exchange by contributing to developing and growing HD4’s brand identity, such that it is

recognizable by academics, policy makers and practitioners as an expert, influential body.

An important focus of HD4 is to extend beyond the use of traditional dissemination methods, and to innovate

new approaches to knowledge exchange and impact, including through use of online tools. A key responsibility
