Commodity Analyst

Passionate about commodities, metals and mining? A commodity analyst position has opened up within CRU’s Steel team.

The Commodity analyst will sit within CRU’s global Steel raw materials team which is spread across London, Sydney, Singapore, Mumbai and Beijing and covers Iron Ore, Metallurgical coal, Coke and Steel markets. The analyst will develop in-depth understanding and knowledge on how the fundamentals drive commodity markets as well as master the shorter term dynamism of international commodities in terms of pricing, global trade and the macroeconomic factors that affect commodity markets. The analyst will provide market intelligence and insights on these markets and undertake fundamentals analysis to deliver the Metallurgical Coal market outlook.

**Knowledge, data analysis and modelling**
- Responsibility of CRU’s global research on metallurgical coke and deep involvement in adjacent market research in metallurgical coal and steel. Develop and leverage broad understanding of global coal market.
- Maintain key datasets for areas of specialisation to a high standard, ensuring these are integrated with wider supply chain data.
- Understand, maintain and use existing models and processes to deliver insightful analytical content.
- Engage with the market to develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the steel market.

**Leadership & growth**
- Lead CRU’s research on the Met. Coke market. Integrate this view into the broader Metallurgical Coal outlook.
- Initial secondary responsibility for the Metallurgical coal market outlook, with scope to grow within this framework as market knowledge and thought leadership develops.
- Forge solid customer relationships that help our services become embedded in customers workflows.
- Work with other CRU divisions and departments, for example to drive new business (Sales & Marketing), develop and share IP or work on single-client projects (Consulting) and develop and deliver webinars, seminars and conferences (Events).

**Communication**
- Create and communicate data driven analysis of market developments and issues that are compelling, logical and cohesive.
- Develop strong working relationship within Met. Coal & coke team.
- Be a key contributor to regular team reports.
- Write timely Insights covering developments in the steel market.
- Conduct and participate in customer meetings and speak at seminars and conferences.

**Customer engagement and market awareness**
- Develop and maintain relationships with key customers and market participants in area of specialisation and across the wider steel value chain.
- Respond to client and internal requests for data and opinions on area of market expertise.
- Support commercial teams to secure sales to new customers.
- Develop strong relationships with existing customers to ensure a high renewal rate for team products.

**Training and collaboration**
- Proactively gather and appropriately share relevant knowledge and intelligence across the Steel team and wider CRU business.
- Collaborate with team members and other CRU analysts and consultants for learning and sharing best practice.
- Collaborate with the Sales and Marketing team to ensure high renewal rates and strong growth in new sales.

**Minimum Required Qualifications**

A top degree from a leading university in relevant fields, including economics, finance, engineering or geology

**Additional Qualifications**
- Additional language capabilities is a benefit
- Exposure to the resources sector would be advantageous
- Exposure working across multi-locations with different cultures would be beneficial

**Knowledge & Experience**
- Strong background in maths and/or economics
- Strong quantitative background and a creative thinker based on a robust approach to data/modelling

**Skills & Competencies**
- Lead conversations with customers and other external stakeholders, delivering CRU analysis and insights in the context of an understanding of their business needs
- Form and shape CRU’s market views, working with the contribution of colleagues and own market analysis work
- Manage the production of written reports, presentations and webinar content
- Build and grow methodology and other intellectual property
- Represent CRU at industry events
- Support formation of marketing campaigns by identifying and shaping relevant market and industry themes and content
- Research, and analyse quantitative and qualitative information to formulate and evidence market insights

**Technical & Other Skills**
- Strong data modelling skills are important as the job requires a high degree of data modelling and quantitative analysis
