DESIGNATION : Research Fellow (1-year contract), YPHSL
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Legal information extraction, summarisation, and representation: How can we improve theextraction of information from legal texts, such as statutes, regulations, and case law? How can thisinformation be parsed without loss of important detail? What are the best ways to represent and modellegal knowledge for use in AI systems?
- Legal ontology and knowledge representation: How can we develop and maintain comprehensivelegal ontologies that capture the complex relationships between legal concepts, entities, and norms?How can these ontologies be used to improve AI’s understanding of legal language and reasoning?
- Legal reasoning and argumentation: How can we develop AI models capable of understanding andreasoning with legal concepts, principles, and rules? How can we create AI systems that can generateand evaluate legal arguments, taking into account various jurisprudential theories and legal systems?How can we incorporate legally important features such as source referencing or “reasoned” answersinstead of generic answers to prompts?
- Automating legal processes: How can AI and machine learning technologies be integrated intoexisting legal workflows, such as contract drafting, discovery, or regulatory compliance? What are theethical and practical considerations of using AI to automate legal tasks and decision-making? Whatobstacles and gaps arise in private law (especially contract law) in its current form? Does theautomation of legal workflows (including through use of AI, for example in “prompt-based legalengineering”) require regulation to ensure proper and responsible use? What are the implications forlegal professional regulation?
- AI in justice and alternative (including online) dispute resolution: What implications does AIenhancedcomputational law have for traditional adjudication and decision-making? How could AI beused to facilitate negotiation, mediation, or arbitration in legal disputes? How would this interact withthe broader context of computational law (e.g. smart legal contracts, machine-readable legislation, anddigital assets)? What are the challenges and benefits of integrating AI into online dispute resolutionplatforms?
QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated legal and technical fluency, with an understanding of legal concepts, principles, and terminology as well as programming languages, algorithms, and software development.
- Demonstrated cross-disciplinary interest and aptitude for self-directed lifelong learning, for example through formal courses or through structured and effective autodidactic efforts.
- Excellent research skills, with a track record of high-quality publications in leading academic journals or conferences.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Some experience in project management, including the design, execution, and evaluation of research projects.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present research findings clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
