As a senior genetic counsellor, you will be part of a dynamic team providing pre and post genetic testing counselling for patients referred for hereditary cancer syndromes. This role involves assessing family histories to explain possible hereditary syndromes, using validated risk models to calculate and provide advice on cancer risks, and explaining hereditary conditions and subsequent appropriate risk management during pre-counselling.

About the Role
  • You will assist patients in understanding and managing pre-test concerns such as ethical, social and legal implications of genetic tests. Your expertise in genetic counselling will enable you to provide timely and empathetic support to patients navigating complex medical information.
  • You will interpret results and provide recommendations for appropriate risk management, arranging referrals to sub-specialties for further management where necessary.
  • Effective case management is key, involving documenting patient visits, communication, tests and results with efficient and well-coordinated schedules for genetic tests with laboratories.
  • Collating and organising written, verbal communication, counselling details and genetic testing results into comprehensive reports for consultants.
  • Providing educational supervision to genetic trainees and medical professionals, enhancing their knowledge and skills in genetic counselling.
  • Participating in research projects related to cancer genetics, contributing to advancements in the field.
  • Carrying out duties assigned by the head of cancer genetics service, ensuring seamless coordination and execution of tasks.
Key Skills and Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Genetic Counselling or equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of relevant working experience.
  • Desirable: experience working in a cancer genetics service.
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Empathy-driven decision-making and effective counselling techniques.
