Commercial Estimator Role Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Commercial Estimator to contribute to the success of our organization by ensuring the accuracy of technical proposals and adherence to latest rules and regulations.

As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and obtaining best prices and quotes from vendors and subcontractors, reviewing terms and conditions of their quotes.

You will also submit and perform shipbuilding projects cost estimation for management approval. This includes understanding shipbuilding processes, classification societies' regulations, and statutory rules.

Additionally, you will prepare well-written detailed technical specifications write-ups for new build aluminum and steel vessels. You will study project specifications to understand customer requirements by identifying project requirements, labor, and material costs.

You will interpret blueprints and analyze related applicable documents to prepare estimates. You will work closely with vendors, subcontractors, engineers, naval architects, external ship designers, and classification societies during estimate creation to ensure overall accuracy.

The successful candidate will adhere to company standards and guidelines when providing cost estimates, focusing on maximizing profit while mitigating potential risks to the organization.

Cash flow budgeting and assisting sales teams in tender preparation transactions are also key responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure accuracy of technical proposals and adherence to latest rules and regulations
  • Sourcing, negotiating, and obtaining best prices and quotes from vendors and subcontractors
  • Submit and perform shipbuilding projects cost estimation for management approval
  • Prepare well-written detailed technical specifications write-ups for new build aluminum and steel vessels
  • Study project specifications to understand customer requirements
  • Interpret blueprints and analyze related applicable documents to prepare estimates
  • Work closely with vendors, subcontractors, engineers, naval architects, external ship designers, and classification societies during estimate creation
Required Skills and Qualifications:

A minimum 5-10 years of experience in a similar role with a proven track record within similar industries (Engineering, Ship Building, Heavy Manufacturing, Oil & Gas) is required.

Past experience in new build aluminum vessel cost estimation and ability to write shipbuilding technical specifications is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate will have attention to detail, good time management skills, and the ability to perform multiple tasks under fast-paced environments while maintaining accuracy in cost estimates and technical proposals.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential, as is experience in the management of commercial and defense shipbuilding proposals.

Ability to produce and present complex solutions of between USD$5M to USD$100M in value is also necessary.

Formal management or engineering qualifications are highly desirable, along with high-level presentation skills, performance and outcome orientation, commercial acumen, strong networks in the industry, and commitment to continuous improvement, teamwork, and open communications.
