Roles & Responsibilities

The National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) in collaboration with the National Dental Research Institute Singapore (NDRIS) and Duke-NUS Medical School, is seeking an exceptional Research Fellow with a strong background in materials science and engineering, particularly in biomaterials processing and microfabrication.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary translational research team dedicated to the development of novel biodegradable materials and structured devices intended for clinical application in oral health. NDCS is a leader in dental innovation and offers a dynamic environment that integrates scientific discovery with a patient-centric solutions.

Job Description:

The selected candidate will

  • Lead the fabrication and optimization of bioresorbable polymer-based medical devices using advanced micro- and macro-fabrication techniques such as nanoimprint lithography, photolithography, 3D imprinting, and thermal molding.
  • Develop and validate processing workflows, performing material characterization (e.g., SEM, CLSM, FTIR, DSC), and collaborating with clinicians and scientists to support preclinical evaluation and regulatory translation.
  • Contribute to data analysis, manuscript preparation, and dissemination of findings at conferences and symposia.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in polymer processing, microfabrication, and surface engineering.
  • Strong publication record and experience working in multidisciplinary teams are essential.
  • Familiarity with translational research environments, medical device standards, or regulated manufacturing workflows (e.g., ISO 13485) will be considered advantageous.
  • Prior experience with medical-grade polymers, surface microstructuring, and tooling design is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated track record of hands-on fabrication and optimization of biodegradable or bioactive materials for healthcare applications.
  • Peer-reviewed publications (preferably in top-quartile journals) showcasing independent research contributions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams comprising materials scientists, biologists, clinicians, and regulatory experts.
  • Experience in drafting technical reports, contributing to grant proposals/IP filings, and presenting findings at international conferences.
  • Prior involvement in mentoring or supervising junior researchers and managing laboratory workflows will be viewed favourably.
