About the role The Head of English Language Support will be responsible for the foundation and overall leadership of the EAL, Preparatory Course Primary, Preparatory Course Secondary programmes, which should result in the pupils developing the English language skills and ability to access the English National curriculum. The successful candidate will ensure the promotion of a caring and happy atmosphere throughout the EAL, PCP & PCS programmes, focusing on our three pillars of curiosity, confidence and kindness. He or she is expected to recruit and lead a team of outstanding teachers and teaching assistants, all of whom should buy in to this ethos. The effective management of department resources, in order to provide the most efficient learning opportunities for the pupils, is expected. What you will be doing Leadership To lead and manage the day-to-day operation of our intensive programme for pupils with beginner-level English proficiency – the Preparatory Course for Primary & Secondary and the less intensive EAL programme for pupils of intermediate level of English proficiency. To support the Head of College in delivering the vision for Brighton College Singapore and be a positive, productive and supportive member of the Senior Leadership Team. To line manage, mentor and coach the Leads of both programmes. To be responsible for the effective performance of all EAL teachers and teaching assistants via a proactive process of staff development. To provide strategic direction, vision and quality assurance for Whole School EAL provisions. Demonstrate financial acuity in the management of the budget, and ensure effective management and deployment of resources. Marketing and Admissions To take an active role working with the Heads of Marketing and Admissions and the Head of College, when recruiting pupils for the EAL & PCP Programmes. Working with the teaching team, to develop a range of innovative and interesting events to help attract new pupils to the school. To attend marketing and admissions events as and when required and as reasonably requested by the Head of College. Liaise with Admissions towards the development of admissions policies and procedures as required, to identify any EAL needs prior to entry. Assessment of prospective pupils and to provide appropriate parental feedback, as necessary. To explore, design and deliver any relevant possible EAL provisions which may increase pupil recruitment and revenue. Education To develop, in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team and Team Leads, the curriculum for all subject areas taught in the PCP, PCS and EAL Programmes, and ensure staff are led in such a way that outstanding standards are maintained in all areas. To evaluate the effectiveness of the planned curriculum and to ensure an appropriate system of assessment and record keeping is maintained by EAL Teachers and Teaching Assistants. Ensure effective Individual Development Plans are devised, implemented and reviewed for pupils significantly below their age-appropriate English language levels. To be responsible for the academic progress of pupils from beginner to intermediate to proficient levels of English Language proficiency. To be responsible for the pastoral welfare of pupils in both programmes. To provide an engaging and relevant co-curricular programme for pupils (for pupils in the PCP programme – if applicable) Ensure that all teachers have a clear picture of pupils’ EAL needs across the school and that all teachers are able to make best use of this information in planning their lessons and schemes of learning. Through the school CPD programme, provide staff INSET, create regular opportunities for teachers and Classroom Practitioners to share, reflect and improve on classroom practice. Communication & Engagement To maintain and develop effective relationships with all current and prospective parents. To report to the Head of College & Head of Prep School on all matters pertaining to EAL To participate in the school’s consultative procedures to ensure an effective communication system and good liaison between the different departments. To meet with prospective new parents and explain to them the aims and ethos of EAL/PCP including its teaching methods, facilities and pupil progress. To encourage parents to take an active interest in their child’s progress and make them feel welcome in the school. To promote excellent communication and relations between school and home, fostering these to ensure a working partnership. To ensure that current parents are kept informed of their child’s progress via informal and formal meetings alongside the school’s reporting cycle. To report to the Governors and attend meetings as required. To liaise with the School Nurse on all matters relating to illness and injury. To liaise with the Operations Director on matters relating to repairs and new work needed to the building. To liaise with the Catering Team concerning special diets etc and to ensure that all information from parents concerning diets is shared. To liaise and work together positively with our local partners – Cognita as and when requested. Publish and regularly review the EAL policy and procedures document, and strategic planning documents. Run parent workshops in the area of EAL support and language development. Guide and assist relevant staff in their communication with parents, colleagues and the wider community with regard to the school’s EAL support programmes, procedures and practices. Ensure that staff commit to supporting the Inclusion team by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships Administration To exercise control over the Department’s budget. To organise cover for absent staff. To draw up the timetable in order to provide a balanced, age- appropriate curriculum and to allow for the teaching of specialist teachers. To recruit and appoint new staff in consultation with the Head of College. Attend parents' evenings and school functions as required. Undertake all duties and procedures as specified in staff handbook. Occasionally lead whole school assemblies. Attend Parent Association events and other evening/weekend events. Attend staff/curriculum meetings including occasional whole school meetings. Participate in the appraisal process. This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities and the successful candidate will be expected to carry out any additional duties reasonably requested by the Head of College. Ensure the Parent Handbook is accurate, up to date, and reflective of current school policies and procedures. Lead the annual review process in collaboration with relevant academic and operational teams and coordinate its distribution to all families. Who we are looking for The successful candidate for this challenging and rewarding position will have at least five years’ teaching experience in a similar capacity or as an experienced subject leader. Knowledge and understanding of an outstanding EAL provision will be essential. The successful candidate will have a university degree and teaching qualification from a recognised academic institution.
