Research Associate

Overview

The UNSW research group of Scientia Professor Andrea Morello has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in theoretical quantum information with high-spin nuclei in silicon. The project aims to demonstrate quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei, exploiting the high dimensionality of the Hilbert space to encode robust logical qubits. The focus is on fault-tolerant quantum operations, quantum error correction, and scalability beyond one atom. The role is theory‑focused and involves developing new theory for quantum information processing in high‑dimensional systems and informing future directions for the experimental effort. The position reports to Scientia Professor Andrea Morello.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply theoretical frameworks for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems, with emphasis on high-spin nuclei in silicon.
• Study fault-tolerant quantum operations and quantum error correction in practical device contexts.
• Propose and analyze theoretical directions to inform experimental efforts and scalability beyond a single atom.
• Collaborate with experimental colleagues and publish results in peer‑reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
• Present findings within the group and at external seminars, contributing to the intellectual leadership of the project.
• Work independently with limited supervision and contribute to the overall research program.
• Contribute to UNSW aims, policies and guidelines, including health and safety requirements.

Qualifications Research Associate (Level A)

• PhD (or soon to be awarded) in quantum physics, quantum engineering, or related area.
• Demonstrated track record of developing original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
• Demonstrated track record of applying quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.

Senior Research Associate (Level B)

• PhD in Physics, Quantum Engineering, or related area. Previous postdoctoral experience in relevant areas of research is preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of developing original theory in the field of quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
• Demonstrated track record of applying quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
• Demonstrated track record in developing original research directions in quantum information theory.
• Experience in day-to-day supervision of PhD and undergraduate students.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
• Strong track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity, and evidence of leadership in the writing of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Proven ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise honours and postgraduate research students.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.

Salary

• Research Associate - Level A – AUD $117,877 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
• Senior Research Associate – Level B – AUD $127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation
