Position Purpose

The Head, Ethics, Compliance & Legal, APAC is based at Avanos’ office in Singapore (or as otherwise designated) and is part of the Ethics & Compliance Department, reporting directly to the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and indirectly to the General Counsel. This position is mainly responsible for implementation and maintenance of the Corporate Compliance Program in APAC. This position is also responsible for managing the legal needs for the APAC region, including drafting agreements, maintaining legal entities, managing HR-related legal matters, and providing legal advice to internal customers. This role supports various Avanos teams and departments with guidance to accomplish business objectives and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Avanos policies.

Responsibilities
  • Oversight : Leads the implementation of the Global Compliance Program in APAC and provides principal Legal support in the Region under the direction of the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and the General Counsel.
  • Ethics & Compliance Responsibilities
    • Regional Leadership : Supports International Compliance Oversight Committee and other Ethics & Compliance meetings and activities; enhances and implements processes; advances Avanos Ethics & Compliance Culture; implements and maintains the Corporate Ethics & Compliance Program in APAC, including region-specific requirements.
    • Advice and Guidance : Provides day-to-day advice to relevant business teams on Ethics & Compliance matters; participates in regional leadership team meetings.
    • Risk Assessment : Supports annual risk assessments and reviews activity-specific plans; provides training and guidance on the risk assessment process and tools.
    • Written Standards : Supports drafting, implementation and communication of compliance-related policies and procedures.
    • Program Management : Implements actions per the annual work plan and KPIs.
    • Regional Privacy : Manages compliance with privacy laws, including acting as Data Privacy Officer.
    • Training and Communications : Supports annual training plans; develops communications on key ethics & compliance risks and initiatives; provides additional training as needed.
    • Monitoring and Auditing : Supports the Audit, Monitoring and Investigations teams; implements monitoring processes; participates in ride-alongs where applicable.
    • Third Party Management : Supports third party risk management including NSTP compliance and site visits.
    • Investigations : Assists in investigations, including document reviews, interviews and drafting reports; ensures consistent investigative processes.
    • Corrective Actions : Implements and tracks corrective actions and assesses effectiveness.
  • Legal Responsibilities
    • Contract Management : Drafts and negotiates country-specific and cross-border commercial agreements.
    • Corporate Secretariat : Manages corporate legal entities matters.
    • Litigation Management : Provides counsel on dispute resolution, including litigation.
    • General Legal Advice
      • Review marketing and product claims materials for legal compliance.
      • Provide legal advice to Human Resources on employee matters.
      • Advocate to government agencies and respond to inquiries and subpoenas.
      • Hire and manage outside counsel as directed by the General Counsel.
      • Provide other legal services as required for a publicly-traded, global medical device company.
    • Global Legal Initiatives : Lead significant Legal Department and cross-functional initiatives.
Qualifications (Education/Experience/Competencies)

Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree or its non-U.S. equivalent – required.
  • J.D. degree (or equivalent) – required.
  • Advanced degree (MBA or another relevant credential) - preferred.
  • Specific training in healthcare compliance, privacy and related topics – preferred.

Professional Experience :

  • 7-12 years of experience at a medical device, pharmaceutical, or other healthcare organization implementing a compliance program or related roles in Internal Audit, Finance or Legal.
  • Expertise in Marketing or other fields considered if demonstrated to perform job duties.
  • Healthcare industry experience in Device, Pharma, or Biotech is preferable.
  • English fluency required; fluency in Mandarin, Japanese, or other Asian languages preferred.
  • Ability to provide risk-balanced advice to business leaders and manage complex ethical and legal issues in APAC.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills; ability to analyze complex matters and present clearly.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage a heavy, multi-directional workload.
  • Demonstrates integrity and commitment to high ethical standards.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team; collaborative, builds trust and consensus.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven with risk awareness; ability to work in a matrixed organization and across cultures.
  • Strategic thinker with attention to contract drafting and policy writing; able to focus on EMEA while ensuring global consistency.
  • Leadership qualities, business acumen, and the ability to provide timely risk-balanced guidance.
