Job Family Group: Legal Group About the Role bp supports its power trading business in Japan from Tokyo or Singapore. The role is located in one of these two sites with minimal travel. bp’s electricity trading and origination organization is expanding in the Japanese power market. The role supports business development, origination, and marketing to new and existing customers of power supply/offtake and renewable initiatives. Key Accountabilities Provide full legal support to the Japan power business, including advising on power purchase agreements, greenfield and brownfield financing, and power supply and trading contracts for projects and markets in Japan. Support bespoke power business transactions and day‑to‑day trading activities in Japan as part of the ST&S legal team in the Asia Pacific region. Advise on new projects and strategic initiatives. Handle disputes related to trading contracts and governmental and regulatory investigations. Work closely with ST&S legal colleagues in Singapore and other regions, bp legal specialist teams, and outside counsel. Communicate with business and functional stakeholders independently, providing prompt and commercially focused advice to managing counsel and ST&S on complex matters. Provide English / Japanese legal translation support. Essential Education Qualified to practice law in Japan or another jurisdiction. 6‑8 years post‑qualification experience is ideal. Other candidates with relevant experience may be considered. Essential Experience and Job Requirements Substantial experience drafting Japanese transaction documents. Transactional experience in an international team or company. Ability to prioritize conflicting demands, operate independently, and deliver prompt commercially focused advice. Excellent Japanese drafting skills and professional working proficiency in English. Ability to work flexibly in an international, multicultural environment. Proven track record as a team player handling routine day‑to‑day matters to complex high‑value bespoke transactions. Strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills with a willingness to support others. Deep understanding of commercial drivers in a trading and origination context. Desirable Criteria Experience in Japanese power markets, drafting and negotiating bankable PPAs (not essential). Regulatory advisory experience involving power trading in Japan and dealings with METI (advantageous). Commodity trading experience and understanding of market dynamics and risks in Japan (helpful). Knowledge of competition/antitrust, sanctions, anti‑bribery and corruption law.
