**Function/Scope of Position**:
The Research and Development Engineer is responsible for the evaluation of various drug polymer formulation prototypes, planning and execution of formulation testing/evaluation, and supporting nonclinical studies and product development for pipeline projects at Orchid Medical. This individual will build and maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in extended local anesthetic drug delivery, and clearly communicate technical findings and knowledge within the organization, including presenting to non-technical audience. The individual must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in an entrepreneurial, hands-on, and rapid paced biotechnology company developing drug device combination products.

**Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to**:

- Applies technical expertise in materials science and engineering to design, develop, test and manufacture drug device combination or extended drug delivery products
- Researches and integrates new technologies and materials through investigation and understanding of technical knowledge and state-of-the-art principles and theories
- Develops solutions to technical problems that are aligned with the strategies and goals of the organization
- Develops and conducts internal research and scientific experiments in support of pipeline product development
- Documents research and development processes and testing results through lab notebooks and written reports
- Collaborates with internal and external partners, as well as identify vendors and suppliers needed throughout product development process
- Maintains lab equipment in support of pipeline product development and troubleshoots related equipment issues
- Coordinates testing and reporting activities at contract research organizations (CROs) as needed

**Education and Experience Requirements**:

- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, preferably Materials Science and Engineering or Biomedical Engineering

**Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities**:

- Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communications and critical thinking
- Demonstrated experience in writing scientific documents
- Demonstrated knowledge of statistical techniques, such as data trend analysis and design of experiments
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Knowledge of in vitro test methods for evaluating drug release profiles from fluid, gel and/or paste dosage forms a plus
- Bioabsorbable polymers experience or understanding a plus
- Prior experience with research in small molecules a plus
- Prior experience with animal studies a plus
- Prior experience in planning and executing quality control lot release tests including in vitro elution, related substances, total drug content, and content uniformity a plus
- Prior experience in designing and developing in vitro bench models for drug device combination products a plus
- Prior experience in designing and developing manufacturing processes for drug device combination products a plus
