Senior/staff R&d Engineer

**Job Description**:
**Key Accountabilities**:

- Develop electrical and mechanical system integration modelling & simulation including discrete electrical component, energy management and operation optimization for Rolls-Royce aerospace electrical power system.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership in the modeling and simulation/integration of power electronic based power system technologies and mixed Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
- A basic knowledge on cooling system modelling for power electronic, network and machines models.
- Technical execution of external control testing with virtual testbed on aerospace electrical power system to perform control-hardware-in-the-loop with the strong knowledge on real-time FPGA model.
- Maintain a good general understanding of the various electrical power systems and technologies deployed within Rolls-Royce aerospace hybrid-electric and full-Electric power and propulsion systems. These include power electronic converters, electrical machines, energy storage systems, power management systems, control systems etc.
- Keep abreast of the various codes/standards/certification processes for aerospace and other engineering fields.
- Provide technical support on high level system controller integration and testing with Aerospace electrical system.
- Support System Verification and Validation (V&V) activities. This includes the collection of simulation and test requirements, develop methodologies, tools, and the automation environment to enable comprehensive system de-risking within project development cycle time, cost and resources etc.
- Lead R&D projects and manage cross-functional activities to deliver committed milestones, on time and within budget while meeting technical, business and customer requirements.
- Engage senior management from the different RR businesses on the planning and execution of strategic R&D activities.
- Co-ordinate collaborative projects with key research partners in R&D initiatives.
- Maintain good customer and stakeholder engagement throughout the project cycle.
- Support the achievement of department objectives aligned with Corporate global objectives.

**Qualifications**:

- Experience in commercial electrical power system solutions design and demonstration, i.e. architecture, component operation, system operation, associated products etc.
- First-hand experience in design, modeling, simulation, and emulation of electrical power systems, especially involving sub-MW/ MW range power electronics-based systems.
- First-hand experience in implementing the designed electrical power system in modeling, simulation, and emulation (e.g. Hardware-in-loop) environment with associated system model validation test-plan to validate the operational functionalities as per the specific electrical compliance requirements and standards.
- General understanding of control systems and system level interaction dynamics.
- Experience in AC, DC, and mixed power distribution for aerospace power systems. It will be advantageous to have similar experience on marine, Automotive, Train and Microgrids.
- Experience in system stability analysis, fault management, short circuit analysis, load flow analysis, protection coordination, distributed energy resources integration, renewable energy forecasting/control, and other generation equipment synchronization/interaction.
- First-hand experience in system level monitoring, control, and operations interfaces e.g. HMI/ SCADA etc.
- Good understanding of various codes and standards for aerospace and other engineering and simulation fields, certification processes, especially for novel and emerging technologies.
- Experience in working in multi-domain team (electrical, mechanical, control and thermal). In general, you should have broad interests across engineering disciplines and a sound understanding of interactions with other engineering disciplines.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, global team environment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- An ability to achieve targets while working on multiple projects simultaneously.
- An ability to monitor social, industrial, and academic developments of technology and develop technology development plans.
