As a Shipbroker, you may cover many disciplines, such as sale and purchase, newbuilding, chartering or product broking. However, most Shipbrokers will specialize in one segment.

Typical responsibilities of a Shipbroker would involve marketing of tonnage (ships) to customers/shippers/charterers. Negotiate spot/time charters to achieve optimal services for one’s client.

You would maintain and update records or tonnage within the company’s database. You would do voyage and lifecycle earning calculations. You would be tasked to analyze the supply and demand balance and guide clients accordingly to market trends.

A Shipbroker is involved in many stages of setting up and negotiating deals, including presenting the business to potential clients, negotiating the main and supplement terms of a contract or sale and seeing it through to its conclusion and any follow up that may be necessary.

Like any role that involves buying and selling, a good Shipbroker would build up a database of contacts and keep a close eye on the shipping market, interpreting trends and seeing opportunities for clients.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

- Highlighting fixture opportunities to clients.
- Developing / expanding a client base.
- Understanding the business strategy for the CPP division and seeking to identify new business opportunities relating to trends, future markets, products, and clients.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the market space.
- Performing market analysis and providing market insight and trade ideas to clients.
- Working with other team-members across the division internationally to meet client needs.
- Servicing and developing client relationships, including by providing valuable and frequent communications with clients.
- Assisting with charter parties and issuing recaps relating to charters for the transport of cargos on vessels.
- Developing and executing business strategies to achieve short and long-term goals
- Able to identify opportunity for growth, assist with recruitment training and onboarding processes.
- Minimum 2-3 years of proven track records

Skills and Experience

The role of shipbroker will require the following skills:

- Being able to operate in a dynamic environment;
- Being personable and able to maintain good client relationships
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Fluency in English; additional language skills to compliment the department
- Being self-driven and motivated
- Being professional, confident, enthusiastic and detail-oriented;
- Having excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills;
- Having the ability to work independently, exercise good judgment and be resourceful;
- Having good organisational skills
- Ability to work within a team.

In addition:
1. Knowledge and experience is required in/of
- The maritime/shipping sector
- Physical shipbroking and associated practices
- CPP trading; and
- IT systems commonly used by shipbrokers.
