Hewlett Packard Labs: AI Data Foundation Research Engineer

This role has been designated as ‘Edge’, which means you will primarily work outside of an HPE office.

The role is at the intersection of Data Engineering, Data Science, and Computer Systems. It requires strong hands-on experience with development of AI models across multiple modalities including generative AI with Large Language Models (LLM), Computer Vision, and AI for Science; solid understanding of meta-data and data foundation layers of AI platforms and MLOps frameworks; and experience in system performance impacts of various AI technologies on compute and data movement performance. This includes keeping up with latest advancements in the field, developing novel leading-edge technologies and coming up with detailed analysis and recommendations for the best state-of-the technologies to leverage where available.

The role requires the ability to explore, understand and address a variety of data layer orchestration and optimization challenges at scale for enterprise, edge and scientific AI. It is expected that the technologist would also become an active regular contributor to external open-source communities.

**Qualifications and Education Requirements**:

- PhD in Computer Science or related fields
- 10+ years of engineering and research experience in AI Deep Learning, computer architecture and big data technologies
- Strong publication record
- Experience with open-source community contributions - _a plus_

**Preferred Skills**:

- Strong programming skills and experience with Python, C/C++, with high proficiency in data structures and algorithms
- Strong experience in deep learning research or software development, GPU acceleration, and Model Optimization
- Experience in system software performance and scalability optimization
- Experience with multi-threaded programming, parallel processing, OOD/OOP/distributed programming
- Strong experience with AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms
- Experience with tools and frameworks for DataOps, MLOps and Trustworthy AI
- Experience in big data/ML/deep learning frameworks (e.g. Spark, Kafka, Tensorflow/PyTorch), end-to-end production pipelines for AI and Machine Learning and in the data layer underlying the pipelines.
- Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in containerized development and orchestration tools (e.g. Kubernetes, Ezmeral) - _desired_

**Additional Notes**:

- We are particularly interested in individuals with a background in machine learning, deep learning, computer systems, big data pipelines, data management, distributed storage systems, with a good understanding of the current state of the art, major trends and opportunities, and a demonstrated track record in making things real in innovative ways.
