Responsibilities

Duties for a naval architect include:

  • Technical consultation: Serving as a technical consultant for existing vessels by advising on maintenance, repairs, conversions, and investigating faults or accidents.

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field is typically required. Relevant coursework includes fluid mechanics, marine structures, and CAD.
  • Technical skills: Proficiency with industry-standard software is essential. This includes CAD programs like Rhino and GStarCAD, as well as analysis tools for stability (e.g., Maxsurf) and structural integrity (e.g., ANSYS).
  • Mathematical aptitude: Strong skills in calculus, trigonometry, and physics are necessary for performing complex engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Problem-solving: The ability to find creative and effective solutions to complex design and engineering problems is a critical skill.
