Responsibilities

Duties for a naval architect include:

  • Designand development: Using computer-aided design (CAD) software and advanced modeling techniques to create designs and detailed technical specifications for various vessels, including cargo ships, passenger ferries, warships, submarines, yachts, and offshore platforms.
  • Analysis and testing: Performing calculations and simulations to evaluate stability, buoyancy, weight distribution, resistance, and propulsion. This can involve both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and physical model testing.
  • Project management: Overseeing the entire build process, including creating timelines, managing budgets, and coordinating with clients, engineers, vendors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensuring all designs and construction adhere to international maritime regulations and the standards of classification societies like DNV or Lloyd's Register.
  • Supervision: Providing oversight during construction and repair phases to ensure quality control and adherence to design specifications.
  • Technical consultation: Serving as a technical consultant for existing vessels by advising on maintenance, repairs, conversions, and investigating faults or accidents.

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field is typically required. Relevant coursework includes fluid mechanics, marine structures, and CAD.
  • Technical skills: Proficiency with industry-standard software is essential. This includes CAD programs like Rhino and GStarCAD, as well as analysis tools for stability (e.g., Maxsurf) and structural integrity (e.g., ANSYS).
  • Mathematical aptitude: Strong skills in calculus, trigonometry, and physics are necessary for performing complex engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Problem-solving: The ability to find creative and effective solutions to complex design and engineering problems is a critical skill.
  • Leadership and teamwork: Since projects involve collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, strong communication and leadership abilities are vital.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous accuracy is essential for producing safe, functional, and compliant designs.
