Open Government Products (OGP) operates like a startup within the government; We are a fast-paced, dynamic team of engineers, designers, and product managers dedicated to public good. We autonomously identify opportunities to solve public problems using tech, rapidly prototype, and launch solutions—from citizen apps to automating public agency operations. You will be joining the team, which works with government agencies to make their data discoverable, understandable, and usable. Our platform serves over 5,000 datasets from more than 65 government agencies, providing real-time APIs, interactive visualizations, and comprehensive data stories that help Singaporeans understand their country through data. We're looking for a passionate Senior Software Engineer to join our growing team and help evolve Singapore's premier open data platform. You'll be enhancing our existing infrastructure while independently exploring new opportunities to make government data more accessible and useful for all Singaporeans. As our team scales, we expect you to naturally step into technical leadership, guiding architectural decisions, mentoring junior engineers, and raising the overall engineering quality bar across our codebase and development practices. This role demands a blend of technical expertise, product thinking, and leadership skills, fostering a startup mindset within our team as we tackle the challenges of large-scale data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, high-quality software across the tech stack with a focus on data platform infrastructure.

• Provide technical leadership by setting architectural direction and establishing engineering standards for the team.

• Mentor team members and foster their professional growth within the engineering organization.

• Identify and prioritize platform initiatives that enhance user experience and system performance.

• Set technical direction for the team while aligning engineering efforts with the product strategy.

• Collaborate with government agencies to explain technical solutions and improve their data publishing processes.

• Design innovative systems that improve public access to government data while navigating operational constraints.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Proficient in TypeScript, React, and AWS with experience building data-driven applications.

• Strong knowledge of working with RDBMS, particularly PostgreSQL, for large-scale data storage and retrieval.

• Experience working with various data formats and designing systems that handle high-volume data processing workloads.

• Experience designing flexible and robust APIs that serve diverse data consumption patterns.

• Solid understanding of secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC) including CI/CD processes and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

• Proven experience in technical leadership roles with a track record of raising engineering standards in teams.

• Background in startups or fast-paced environments with demonstrated ability to deliver under ambiguity.

• Excellent communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• A passion for public service and improving how citizens access and understand government data.

Projects OGP has worked on include:

ScamShield — iOS and Android mobile apps, enhanced in August 2024, help users check and report suspicious communications. The apps automatically filter known scams using an AI-powered machine learning classifier. An Admin Dashboard also allows police to verify reported scams.

ParkingSG — A mobile app alternative to parking coupons. It lets users pay, extend, and refund their parking sessions just using their phones.

RedeemSG — Helps the Singapore Government to create, send and track redemptions of digital vouchers easily.

COVID-19 Vaccination — A suite of systems built to enable Singapore's national vaccination campaign for COVID-19. This includes informational sites, appointment booking systems, and records management systems.

— An open repository of all the Singapore Government's public data. It helps people understand the data using visualizations and articles, and provides real-time APIs for developers to use.

Isomer — Provides government agencies with an easy-to-deploy static website building and hosting service to create usable, secure and faster informational websites quickly.

FormSG — A form builder tool for agencies to self-service and create online forms that capture classified data, with the goal of replacing paper forms.

PaySG — Was developed to enable digital payments for government services, and was initially used for payments for COVID-19 swab tests and Stay-Home Notices for incoming travellers to Singapore.
