Senior Counsel - Dispute Resolution, Asia
Aon is recruiting a Senior Counsel to join our Dispute Resolution team in Asia and Greater China.
The Disputes Resolution team is part of the Aon Asia law department, and this team is primarily responsible for providing advice and risk management support in relation to professional negligence claims against all of Aon's solution lines.
**Aon is in the business of better decisions**
At Aon, we shape decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world.
As an organization, we are united through trust as one inclusive, diverse team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.
**What the day will look like**
- Lead the Asia Legal function on dispute resolution matters. Responsible for advice and counsel on a wide variety of dispute resolution or related matters. Such as professional negligence and commercial disputes (in particular E&Os); IP and other contractual disputes; disputes with third parties, suppliers and others; drafting settlement terms and correspondence; advising on regulatory, legal and operational issues arising from time to time; investigations, including investigating matters that are reported to Aon Law as claims or circumstances that may give rise to a claim, and advising on steps to minimise or mitigate Aon's potential for liability; and mediations, settlement discussions and court proceedings as required.
- Responsible for working in accordance with the Aon policies, including participation in the management of risks (including completion of required training) that may adversely affect the business, interests or reputation of any Aon group company.
- Advise on regulatory, legal and operational issues arising from time to time and maintain an up to date knowledge of the law.
- Appoint and lead all aspects of the quality and fitness-for-purpose of legal advice provided by external lawyers and leading those relationships generally.
- Provide regular case reports for management and boards.
- Work on special projects and investigations with the Aon law and compliance team and lead projects to improve team know-how, systems and processes.
- Build strong and positive relationships with key business leaders and well as other functions (Claims, Broking, People Organisation, Internal Audit, Finance etc.).
- Provide support to other Aon Law teams (such as Commercial Contracts, Corporate and Employment) as required.
- Supporting the strategic direction of the Aon Group and Legal Department on projects and initiatives that may be allocated from time to time.
**How this opportunity is different**
There is high demand for our expertise in the Disputes Resolution team and this team is often required to become involved in and advise on issues broader than active disputes. We need an experienced lawyer to support the team and to be responsible for overseeing E&O and litigation matters in Asia.
From time to time, our businesses receive claims or lawsuits that relate to professional negligence issues among others. For instance, this could be in our Commercial Risk, Reinsurance or Health business in relation to insurance broking or other services we provide to a client. Or it could be in our Wealth business in relation to pension scheme administration or other services that we provide to a client. Your role will be to support all of our business solution lines in relation to the investigation, defence and settlement of these claims and lawsuits among other types of disputes and investigations.
The team also does a large amount of pre-litigation work which, when it is done effectively, completely mitigates the potential for Aon to have any greater liability thus greatly reducing the risk of financial and reputational loss resulting from E&Os.
**Skills and experience that will lead to success**
- Qualification to practise as a lawyer in common law jurisdiction (whether in Asia or abroad)
- Highly proficient in practical dispute resolution legal experience, including insurance litigation and professional negligence claims (a minimum of 8+ years practical legal experience; experience in-house and in Asia is beneficial, but not required).
- Experience balancing corporate risk with commercial awareness and opportunity.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills with an eye for detail
- Willingness to learn about new areas of work and a logical and enquiring approach to new challenges.
- Experience working in (or advising clients who are in) a regulated environment, including insurance, reinsurance, pensions, asset management and/or investment advisory is beneficial, but not required.
- Aptitude for providing user-friendly legal advice, knowhow and delivery of business-facing coaching/education.
- Experience of developing strategic partnerships/collaboration with clients.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
**How we support our colleagues**
In addition to our comprehensive benefits package, we
