The Chair reports to the Dean of College of Science and is expected to provide leadership and oversight of the academic, intellectual, strategic and administrative affairs of the School. The Chair is expected to work closely with counterparts in the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, Asian School of the Environment, as well as the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, to promote the ethos of cross-cutting innovation in research and teaching embodied by NTU. Building on the existing sub-disciplines in SBS, there will be significant scope for the new Chair to shape the School’s future through recruiting world-class talent and cultivating a successful grant funding culture. The Chair is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee.

Role and Key Responsibilities

NTU is seeking an accomplished, visionary, and creative leader for the position of Chair, SBS.
- The primary function of the appointee is to develop an attainable vision and mission for SBS that is aligned with the University’s vision, mission and strategic direction. The appointee will provide academic, intellectual, strategic, and administrative leadership to the faculty, students, and the corporate community in Singapore and beyond. Vision and passion are critical to this leadership role.
- The appointee will play an important role in leading the strategic development of the School in support of the University’s vision and goals with a view to the evolving business/operating landscape and strengthening its competitive edge to improve the School’s academic ranking.
- As a leader, the appointee will formulate strategies and action plans to achieve the School/University’s strategic vision and goals and provide stewardship of resources, human capital, financial and collaboration across campus.
- The appointee will grow the School through strategic faculty recruitment, fostering financially sound alliances, collaborations, industry partnerships and/or engagement with local and international communities.
- As leader of the School, the appointee must be a role model for collegiality, collaboration across the organization, integrity, and professional competence. The appointee must be fair and be able to gain the trust and confidence of the faculty, staff, students and trainees.
- The appointee will inspire, inculcate a shared vision, lead change, facilitate competitive and impactful outputs that propel the School to the forefront of academic and research excellence.
- The appointee is responsible for enhancing the corporate branding of SBS and position it as a thought leader in biological sciences within and outside of Singapore.
- The appointee is responsible for enhancing the School’s value proposition and standing through delivering high-quality educational programs including those for undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and continuing Biological Sciences education.
- The appointee must be a leader with international professional impact in their field. The appointee will attract, retain, develop and deploy faculty and staff to deliver high-quality professional services creating excellent student and stakeholder experience.
- The appointee is responsible for delivering the mission of SBS, specifically programs and initiatives of the College and the SBS Steering Committee. The appointee may have parallel responsibilities managing an interdepartmental or extra departmental unit such as a centre or a facility with parallel expectations as held for their duties. Ultimately the appointee must maintain the confidence of the Dean and Steering Committee.
- The appointee is responsible for keeping abreast of development in biological sciences, SWOT analysis, strategic planning, enterprise risk management, creating organizational learning and a vibrant and inclusive working environment, resource planning, budgeting and continuous process improvement. She/he is also charged with fiduciary and regulatory agency compliance related to the School’s activities.
- A core responsibility of the appointee is succession planning including but not limited to building leadership bench strength, talent spotting, cultivating the talent pool, formulating talent management strategies and talent development programs.
- The appointee will hold a concurrent professorial appointment and contribute to teaching, research, and other scholarly activities.

Professional Experience / Qualifications
- Concrete experience in academic programs, and outstanding leadership and management capabilities.
- An earned doctorate and an internationally recognized record of high impact research and teaching that merits appointment as a full professor with tenure in the NTU School of Biological Sciences.
- Outstanding leadership and administrative credentials from a Biological Sciences department or other relevant academic setting. Proven track record in student and postdoc supervision
