General Summary:
Evaluates the electrical and mechanical characteristics of systems and/or integrated circuits, components, and sub-components to determine the cause of failure, including the verification of analog and digital performance. Analyzes failure reports, identifies the root causes of issues, and recommends corrective action. Develops methods, processes, procedures and equipment that will improve the failure analysis process and/or reduce failures.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or related field.

Physical Requirements:

- Frequently transports and installs equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Performs required tasks at various heights (e.g., standing or sitting).
- Frequently transports between offices, buildings, and campuses up to ½ mile.
- Monitors and utilizes computers and test equipment for more than 6 hours a day.
- Continuous communication which includes the comprehension of information with colleagues, customers, and vendors both in person and remotely.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Performs failure analyses on straightforward issues (e.g., level 1) following clearly defined procedures.
- Seeks fundamental knowledge in an area of failure analysis (e.g., physical failure analysis, electrical microscopy, nanoprobing, etc.) to complete assigned work.
- Performs physical failure analyses by examining individual layers of silicon to reveal evidence of defect. Works primarily on low-risk, systemic issues that allow analyses to be tried and tested on multiple devices.
- Conducts basic electrical fault isolation analyses to localize 'hot spots' and isolate location of defect.
- Administers non-destructive testing on devices using imaging tools (e.g., X-ray, C-SAM) and/or optical inspections.
- Assists in writing and editing papers and publications.
- Documents results of failure analysis and reports identified root cause.
- Conducts a specific type of failure analysis as assigned by others, and seeks help from more senior engineers as needed.
- Acts as the case owner for a relatively straightforward defect and handles all issues relevant to the case.
- Contributes to process improvement to gain efficiencies or development initiatives and discusses innovation opportunities with supervisor and/or colleagues.
- Requests information from partners in other teams (e.g., design team, product team) to attain further input on devices.
Level of Responsibility:

- Working under close supervision.
- Taking responsibility for own work and making decisions with limited impact; impact of decisions is readily apparent; errors made typically only impact timeline (i.e., require additional time to correct).
- Completing most tasks with multiple steps which can be performed in various orders; some planning and prioritization must occur to complete the tasks effectively; mistakes may result in some rework.
- Exercising some creativity to troubleshoot technical problems or deal with novel circumstances.
- Using deductive problem solving to solve moderately complex problems; most problems have defined processes of diagnosis/detection; some limited data analysis may be required.
The responsibilities of this role do not include:

- Financial accountability (e.g., does not involve budgeting responsibility).
- Influence over key organizational decisions.
- Role in strategic planning.
