The Institute for Digital Molecular Analytics and Science (IDMxS) is a new, unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by Ministry of Education (Singapore), Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore. Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, IDMxS is the world’s first organized effort focused on interfacing the biological and living world with the world of information technology and data science whilst providing fundamental scientific development, grounded in materials science, optics, and interfacial chemistry.

The vibrational spectrum of biological samples can supply detailed information on molecular structure typically unavailable through common fluorescence measurements, capable of identification and discrimination between biomolecular species. Observation of Raman signals however requires enhancement of the Raman cross-section through use of plasmonic nanoparticles or nanostructured substrates. In this project we are developing a polarization light surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) system as a route to optimising SERS signals and performing digital molecular assays. We seek to discriminate, identify and quantify biomolecular properties such as position, orientation and concentration through use of both polarization structured illumination and polarization resolved detection and monitor conformational changes in real time.

Key Responsibilities:
- Build an optical system for arbitrary vector beam generation and spatially structured polarization detection.- Construct a Raman microscopy system and develop supporting lab and analysis software.- Perform both substrate and solution-based SERS experiments on biomolecular samples.- Work closely with and support other researchers working on the project from both a theoretical and experimental standpoint.- Disseminate results through publication in top-tier journals and conference presentations.- Contribute to research administration and assist in grant writing as required.- Supervise PhD and undergraduate student projects as required.

Job Requirements:
- PhD Degree in Physics/Mathematics/Engineering, or related disciplines.- Experimental expertise in SERS and optical imaging/microscopy.- Active and strong knowledge of nanoplasmonics, optical imaging systems, polarization and spectroscopy.- Working knowledge of electromagnetic simulation programs- Working knowledge in experiment automation/programming- Good writing and communication skills.
