Singapore Management University (SMU) has started a global search for its next Dean of the School of Social Sciences (SOSS). Founded in 2000, the University offers a transformative education for a new generation of graduates and leaders, and a multi-disciplinary research environment to help tackle the world’s complexities and positively impact humanity. SMU has grown to become a prominent specialised university for the world of business and management. The University prides itself for its ability to generate leading-edge research with global impact and to produce broad-based, socially engaged, creative and entrepreneurial leaders.
SOSS is one of the eight schools and colleges in the University. Established in 2008, it has a broad disciplinary base and offers a wide range of academic and research programs addressing, amongst other areas, the psychological foundations of the individual and group behaviour, the nature of social institutions, or the driving forces of political action. SOSS offers students a holistic and integrative approach to the study of social issues, and gives students an unrivalled versatility that will keep them relevant in an evolving world. Training Social Science graduates who possess a robust foundation in relevant theories and frameworks while learning to be versatile, manging complexities and solving problems stands at the core of the School’s education framework. Scholars of SOSS have been able to shape a vibrant research environment and are engaged in global collaboration with research peers of leading universities around the world.
The next Dean of SOSS will be able to build on the foundations developed over the past fifteen years and will have the opportunity to accelerate the School’s progress as an Asian leader of research and education in the Social Sciences. In doing so they will need to demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit and bold leadership that both inspires and supports faculty, students and communities the School seeks to serve.
