[What the role is]
The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is one of the oldest tropical botanical gardens and one of only three botanic gardens in the world inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has an extensive living collection, including orchids, palms, cycads, gingers and plants of human cultural significance.
Orchids are one the oldest and most well-recognised collections of the Gardens. Today, the National Orchid Garden (NOG) is a world-renowned attraction housing an extensive collection of orchids with more than 1500 species and 2000 hybrids grown in a 3-hectare garden. NOG also has its own dedicated orchid nursery, which serves multiple functions, including growing of orchids to be displayed in NOG, ex situ conservation of endangered orchid species and creating new hybrids for the Gardens’ orchid breeding programme.
[What you will be working on]
This position is for a horticulture officer. The job will entail the design and execution of horticulture trials aimed at improving the growth and flowering of orchids as well as the cultivation of the cool growing orchid collection.
This includes inventory management and propagation of various cool growing orchid species and hybrids.
[What we are looking for]
- Diploma in Horticulture, Botany, Taxonomy or related field
- Experience in orchid culture and maintenance would be preferred
- A hands-on person, enjoys outdoor work and has a love for orchids
- Able to communicate effectively and a team player
