Overview
The East Asian Institute (EAI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) promotes academic and policy-oriented research on East Asian development, focusing on contemporary China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), and China’s economic relations with Japan, Korea, ASEAN, and the world. The Institute collaborates with regional and international institutions, organises conferences, and provides insights that inform public policy.
Responsibilities
Ensure EAI’s written content is edited to high standards and remains relevant to EAI’s core audiences.
Oversee the production process for EAI’s key research publications (Background Briefs, Commentaries, Flash Briefs, and the East Asian Policy open-access journal).
Contribute to the development of outreach and communication outlets.
Copy editing including grammar, style, punctuation, syntax, usage, accuracy, structure, balance, and fairness.
Train and mentor researchers to ensure high writing quality and adherence to house style.
Collaborate with researchers, translators, and the communications team to enhance readability and presentation of EAI’s research products.
Craft compelling headlines, headings, captions, and illustration notes with awareness of audience and context.
Publications: Oversee the production process for the open-access journal East Asian Policy (EAP), including:
Copy and sub-editing of academic articles, reviewing drafts for accuracy, format, and style.
Typesetting, layout in Adobe InDesign, and proofreading before publication.
Potentially updating EAP design with in-house or external vendors.
Oversee production for ad-hoc EAI publications (books/monographs) in coordination with research teams and contracted publishers.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in humanities (political science, economics, international relations) or communications, with 10 years of experience in academic publishing or media/journalism.
Meticulous with excellent command of English.
Strong awareness of current affairs and public policy, especially in Northeast Asia (China, Korea, Japan).
Understanding of the priorities and interests of EAI’s core audience.
Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
Familiarity with the academic publishing process.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and design/publishing software, especially Adobe InDesign; basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
Proficiency in Chinese (verbal and written) is an advantage for coordination with translators.
Self-motivated and a team player.
