Reports to:
Associate General Counsel – Privacy, Data & AI Compliance - DPO
The Group Legal and Compliance (GLC) department handles a range of commercial, corporate, employment law, data privacy, competition law and regulatory matters. We also develop and implement Cathay's compliance policies and programmes, including competition, anti-bribery, sanctions and data privacy.
As the Senior Privacy, Data & AI Compliance Legal Counsel, you will be part of a team supporting the Associate General Counsel – Privacy, Data & AI Compliance – DPO to advise the Cathay Pacific Group on various Data Laws, including Privacy and Data Protection Regulations (e.g., Hong Kong PDPO, Mainland China PIPL, EU GDPR), Artificial Intelligence Laws (e.g., EU AI Act, Mainland China Interim Measures), and Data Security Regulations (e.g., HK Critical Infrastructure Regulation, PRC Data Security Law).
Key Responsibilities
Support the development and management of frameworks to ensure compliance with Data Laws.
Manage Cathay's Incident Response processes related to Personal Data and AI, including investigations and reporting, and advise on controls to prevent recurrence.
Manage responses to privacy rights requests and data access requirements from authorities.
Assist Business Units with assessments for compliance, such as Privacy Impact and AI Impact Assessments, and advise on outcomes.
Support the management of Cathay's Data Retention and Classification Policies, and keep senior management informed of obligations.
Advise IT Risk & Security and other units on Data Security regulations.
Develop and update training modules and awareness communications on Data Laws.
Monitor controls to ensure ongoing compliance and coordinate with key internal teams.
Draft legal documents, interpret legal requirements, and negotiate contracts related to data privacy and AI compliance.
Requirements
Knowledge of Hong Kong, Mainland China, and European data protection laws; familiarity with regimes like Singapore and US is a plus.
Experience advising on AI and data security regulations preferred.
Law degree with 8+ years of experience in data protection and privacy, with relevant certifications (e.g., CIPM, CIPP, AIGP); or equivalent PQE with privacy or AI experience in a reputable law firm.
Experience fostering a data protection culture in large organizations, handling customer and employee data issues.
Proficiency in Office applications; experience with privacy management software like OneTrust advantageous.
Fluent in English; Cantonese and Putonghua skills are a plus. Strong communication and presentation skills.
Ability to work independently, with high attention to detail and a strategic outlook.
Excellent organizational skills, maturity, and sense of responsibility.
Flexible, able to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Team player capable of collaborating across all organizational levels.
