The Environment, Health & Safety Officer role is a pivotal position within any organization. This individual is responsible for implementing and maintaining policies and programs that ensure compliance with legal requirements, industry standards, and company protocols. The ultimate goal is to create a workplace that prioritizes safety, health, and environmental responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and implement effective workplace safety and health management systems to mitigate risks and promote a safe working environment.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, risk assessments, and audits to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and occupational illnesses; prepare thorough reports and propose preventive measures to minimize future occurrences.
- Deliver engaging toolbox talks, safety briefings, and training sessions to educate staff and contractors on best practices and safety protocols.
- Ensure adherence to environmental regulations and standards by monitoring waste management, pollution control, and sustainability initiatives.
- Support environmental impact assessments and implement improvement programs to reduce the organization's ecological footprint.
- Promote regulatory compliance by staying up-to-date with local laws and submitting required reports to relevant authorities in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive EHS documentation, including policies, procedures, permits, and certifications.
- Develop and implement emergency response and evacuation plans to ensure business continuity in the event of an emergency.
- Conduct regular fire drills and emergency preparedness exercises to test the effectiveness of these plans.
- Cultivate a strong safety culture throughout the organization by promoting a proactive approach to risk management and encouraging employee participation.
- Recommend and implement innovative EHS best practices, continuous improvement initiatives, and cutting-edge technologies to stay ahead of industry trends.
- Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Workplace Safety & Health Officer (WSHO) certification, if required by jurisdiction.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in EHS, preferably in construction and/or facilities industries.
- Strong knowledge of EHS laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage employees at all levels.
- Able to conduct training and present EHS topics clearly, with proficiency in MS Office and EHS management systems/software.
- Attentive to detail, proactive, and hands-on, with a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility to perform site visits as required.
This role may involve working outdoors and exposure to industrial/construction environments, requiring adaptability and a willingness to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
