Job Title: Climate Data Specialist

As a Climate Data Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program. You will be responsible for performing weather observing and data collection tasks under the supervision of the Meteorological Operations Manager and Camp Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a safe workplace program and ensure that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Comply with all Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals, policies and procedures.
  • Perform weather observation, recording, and reporting of surface weather conditions, following Federal Meteorological Handbook (FMH1-b) standards.
  • Report wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions and phenomena.
  • Set up and maintain portable weather stations and operate handheld ceilometers.
  • Assist with daily reporting, communicate with McMurdo via HF radio and Iridium phone, and contribute to end-of-season reports.
  • Work outside in extreme cold weather conditions, load/unload aircraft, prepare cargo for movement, and assist with waste retrograde and hazardous cargo identification.
  • Perform fuel tests, transfers, and maintenance tasks, as well as track and report quantities of fuel delivered to the field and amounts given to aircraft.
  • Assist with tracking maintenance and repair needs of equipment in camp, provide mechanical assistance in vehicle and equipment repair, and operate light equipment vehicles.
  • Assist grantees with support requests and needs, and perform other duties as required.


Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of three years of combined experience in METAR weather observation reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, mechanical equipment proficiency, logistics support, or other related experience
  • One year of experience must be in weather observation (METAR) code
  • Demonstrated ability to observe, record, and report wind direction, wind speed, cloud height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other METAR weather conditions
  • Ability to work in remote and isolated environments, computer competency, and proficient in MS Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver's license issued in the United States
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification
  • Weather Observer Training
  • Federal Meteorological Handbook (FMH1-b) experience
