Senior Optometrist

Job Title: Senior Optometrist - D27

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive eye examinations to assess patients' visual functions, including post-cataract operations.
• Measure axial length and corneal curvature of the eye for intraocular lens calculation using various equipment.
• Conduct ultrasound scans for central opacity cases and visualize fundus with Humphrey Visual Field assessment.
• Assess binocular vision using HESS charts and other tools, and perform anterior segment photography for anterior cases.
• Document oculoplastic photography for trauma and other conditions affecting oculomotor movement, as well as fundus photography for vitreo-retinal cases.
• Prepare and conduct angiographies using sodium fluorescein and indocyanine green dyes under Ophthalmologists' supervision.
• Perform Optical Coherence Tomography for macular thickness scans and optic nerve fibre layer assessment using Zeiss-Cirrus and Heidelberg-HRA.
• Conduct anterior segment OCT, endothelial cell count, and corneal topography to ensure corneal integrity.
• Undertake dilated fundus examination using 78D and 90D lenses with slit-lamp, and 20D lens with binocular indirect ophthalmoscope.
• Function as a clinical optometrist and physician extender in Supplementary Primary Eyecare Clinic (SPEC) for stable eye patients.
• Participate in Community & Home Eye Screening Service (CHESS) ensuring appropriate care and community-based screening.
• Perform Diabetic Retinopathy Photography on diabetic patients requiring regular eye screening.

Management Duties:

• Ensure efficient operations aligning with hospital strategic plans.
• Maintain a pleasant and comfortable patient environment.
• Lead frontline staff in delivering excellent service to patients.
• Identify service discrepancies and work on process improvements.
• Design new service initiatives and patient-centric processes.
• Organize meetings, seminars, screenings, education programs, public forums, etc.
• Optimize clinic sessions and resource utilization.
• Arrange clinical and surgical attachment schedules for local and international optometry students.
• Develop and maintain Clinical Operational standards in SOPs.

Operational Responsibilities:

• Prepare monthly rosters and plan leave arrangements for Optometrists, Imaging Specialists, Opticians, and Ophthalmic Technicians.
• Ensure staff are appropriately deployed for investigation coverage.
• Maintain investigation rooms adhering to 5S housekeeping standards.
• Supervise training of new allied health staff and develop potential staff members.
• Conduct orientation and induction programs for new allied health staff.
• Emphasize continuous improvement as our way of life by refining work performance daily.
• Assist in training and assessing medical students during clinical attachments.

General Duties:

• Participate in activities promoting smooth department operations.
• Attend regular continuing education/in-service to maintain competency.
• Maintain safe and clean environments and equipment.
• Perform additional duties as requested by senior staff members.
• Assist doctors in taking histories and conducting clinical examinations.
• Perform eye screenings within hospitals and communities.
• Deliver public forums and continuing education sessions on eye care and conditions.
• Organize eye-related events initiated by the department.
• Collect research data and compile statistics as needed.
• Actively engage in all Yishun Health activities.
• Assist in research conducted by the Ophthalmologists and/or Optometrists.

Education, Training, and Experience:

• Minimum education: Diploma/Degree in Optometry.
• Minimum 1 year working experience in Optometry for Junior Optometrist.
• Degree in Optometry with minimum 5 years of relevant experience, OR Diploma in Optometry with minimum 8 years of relevant experience may be considered.
• Ability to handle various equipment involved in visual assessments.
• Ability to lead juniors in clinical and operational duties.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Pleasant appearance with acceptable grooming standards.
• Display keen learner and good attitude towards learning and correction.
