We are seeking a highly skilled Research Fellow to join our team in the Respiratory and Infectious Diseases Programme at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic laboratory led by Professor Pablo Bifani, focusing on applied phage biology.

The primary objective of this position is to contribute to the development of recombinant phages for therapeutic and/or diagnostic purposes. These phages aim to treat patients affected by multidrug-resistant organisms or recalcitrant bacterial infections. The potential impact of this research could be life-saving or improve quality of life.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Perform standard microbiology techniques, including bacterial cultures and phage production, isolation, characterization, etc.
  • Focus on genetic manipulations/engineering of selected bacteriophages, such as knock-out, knock-in, mutagenesis, etc.
  • Responsible for phage recombinant work in the lab
  • Bacterial cultures
  • Phage target deconvolution (understanding mechanisms of action and resistance of selected phages)
  • Design and conduct experiments, including data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge of bioinformatic tools would be beneficial
  • Summarize and present data in lab meetings
  • Develop new research techniques and approaches
  • Perform maintenance of inventory and procurement of laboratory consumables
  • Manage grant and basic logistical requirements associated with the project
  • Ensure safe technical practices and procedures
Key Competencies and Requirements:
  • PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields
  • Expected to have a background working with bacteria and a strong foundation in molecular biology, including recombinant work, genomic, and transcriptomic research
  • Knowledge or expertise working with bacteriophages is an advantage
  • Willngness to learn and comfort working with various bacteria (drug-resistant K. pneumoniae, Acinetobacter, or Mycobacterium abscessus, others)
  • High adaptability in working with different organisms and techniques
  • Collaborative spirit with internal and external collaborators
