The Bioplastics Development Specialist position at our institution is focused on upcycling keratinous waste for bioplastics development.

About the Role

The selected candidate will join an MOE-funded project led by Prof Ng Kee Woei, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to develop and optimize keratin-based bioplastics.

  • Develop and optimize the formulation of keratin-based bioplastics
  • Characterize the produced bioplastics
  • Assess the biodegradation profile of keratin-based bioplastics in soil
Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Conducting thorough literature reviews and generating periodic updates
  • Extracting keratin protein
  • Formulating and optimizing keratin-based bioplastics
  • Characterizing the properties of keratin-based bioplastics (e.g. Mechanical strength, FTIR, SEM, degradability, permeability, water contact, etc.)
  • Analyzing and interpreting research data
  • Developing and optimizing protocols
  • Managing logistical issues and laboratory inventory
  • Participating in collaborative work within a multidisciplinary team and external collaborators
  • Assisting the generation of periodic progress reports as required by funding agencies
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science/Chemistry/Environmental Engineering/Biology or related fields, with experience in polymers, biomaterials research, and material characterization. Experience in environmental science and engineering is a bonus.
