Roles & Responsibilities

Job Description

  • Tunneling Project Planning & Execution:Develop and manage detailed tunneling project plans, including timelines, resources, and milestones.
    Coordinate with engineers, geologists, subcontractors, and project managers to ensure smooth project execution.
    Oversee the design, preparation, and implementation of tunneling methods and techniques (e.g., TBM, drill & blast, or cut-and-cover methods).
    Monitor progress on site, making adjustments to plans as necessary to address unforeseen challenges or delays.
  • Resource Management:Supervise the allocation of materials, equipment, and manpower specific to tunneling operations.
    Ensure the appropriate use and maintenance of tunneling machinery, tools, and equipment (e.g., Tunnel Boring Machines, mucking systems).
    Oversee logistics for materials and equipment transportation to and from the tunnel site.
  • Budget & Cost Control:Create and manage detailed budgets for tunneling projects, tracking expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
    Review and approve invoices for materials, subcontractor services, and equipment usage.
    Address and manage any financial risks associated with project delays, equipment failure, or unexpected site conditions.
  • Safety & Compliance:Ensure adherence to all relevant tunneling and construction safety regulations and protocols (e.g., OSHA, MSHA, local regulations).
    Monitor and enforce safety measures for tunneling workers, including ventilation, ground stabilization, and hazardous material handling.
    Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
    Manage emergency response plans and coordinate with relevant authorities in the event of an incident.
  • Quality Assurance & Control:Ensure tunneling operations meet the quality standards specified in the project contract.
    Oversee testing and inspections of tunnel structures, ensuring compliance with engineering and safety specifications.
    Implement and monitor quality control processes throughout the tunneling phases, from excavation to final lining installation.
  • Team Leadership & Management:Lead and manage tunneling crews, including engineers, foremen, laborers, and subcontractors, ensuring efficient work processes and high morale.
    Provide training and professional development opportunities for the tunneling team, ensuring they are equipped with up-to-date skills and knowledge.
    Resolve conflicts, manage team dynamics, and foster a positive and productive working environment.
  • Stakeholder Communication:Serve as the main point of contact for clients, government agencies, subcontractors, and other key stakeholders.
    Provide regular updates to clients and project stakeholders on project status, timelines, and any challenges encountered.
    Handle communications with local communities affected by tunneling operations, ensuring transparency and minimizing disruption.
  • Risk Management & Problem Solving:Identify and evaluate potential risks to the project's timeline, budget, or safety (e.g., unexpected geological conditions, equipment failure, regulatory changes).
    Develop and implement mitigation strategies for identified risks.
    Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems related to tunneling operations, engineering challenges, or logistical concerns.
  • Environmental & Regulatory Compliance:Ensure tunneling activities comply with all environmental regulations and minimize the environmental impact (e.g., water table management, waste disposal, vibration control).
    Oversee the management of environmental aspects like air quality, noise levels, and site restoration efforts once tunneling is complete.
  • Project Close-Out & Reporting:Ensure proper documentation of tunneling operations, including progress reports, inspection logs, and final project assessments.
    Facilitate the final handover of the tunnel to the client, ensuring all contractual obligations and quality benchmarks are met.
    Conduct post-project evaluations to identify lessons learned and opportunities for process improvement.

Requirements

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 10-15 years of experience in Core Tunneling Construction.
  • Working Conditions: Able to work shift work, 12 hour shift, 6 day work week.
  • Skills:Expertise in tunneling methods, equipment, and technologies (e.g. concept of EPB and slurry TBM machine operation)
    -Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    -Solid understanding of tunneling-specific safety regulations and environmental considerations.
    -Excellent project management skills, with experience in scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
    -Familiarity with tunneling project software and construction management tools.
    -Ability to manage complex, large-scale projects with multiple stakeholders.
