The School of Art, Design andMedia (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invitesapplications for a tenure-track position in Digital Filmmaking(Cinematography). The appointment to Assistant or AssociateProfessor level, will be commensurate withexperience.
Suitable candidates must havesignificant experience in all aspects of cinematography, a holisticunderstanding of the filmmaking process, an appreciation forcinematic narrative and storytelling, as well as evolving cinematicforms. Expertise in at least one or more current technologies,including virtual production, hybrid live-action animation capture,or visual effects cinematography will be an advantage. Applicantsshould demonstrate a sustained track record in film practice andpossess appropriate teaching experience at the undergraduate and/orgraduate level.
We seek an innovative anddynamic educator who is passionate about teaching, academicresearch, and creative practice. Applicants for this position willbe aware of the ever-changing landscape of digital media andnarrative storytelling and will have the confidence to maintaintheir creative, academic, and technical skills to contribute to thevibrant research-driven culture embraced by NTU's School of Art,Design and Media. The successful candidate will play a key role indeveloping an innovative curriculum that aligns with the needs oftoday's industry and society. These positions are research-based,requiring either a well-established research profile or the abilityto quickly establish one.
As a candidate, youshould demonstrate thefollowing:
- Significantexperience and expertise in all aspects of cinematography,expertise in at least one or more up-to-date technologies: virtualproduction, hybrid live-action animation capture, or visual effectscinematography will be seen favorably.
- Aholistic understanding of the filmmaking process, and anappreciation for cinematic narrative and storytelling as well asevolving contemporary cinematic and visual narrativeforms.
- Practical and technical skills supportedby critical and conceptual theory, encompassing diverse approachesto filmmaking throughout all aspects of production and imagepost-production.
- Expertise in overseeingstudents' projects related to digital filmmaking, from initialconcept, screenwriting, production, and post-production to finalimage color grading.
- Passion exploring thefilmmaking beyond its current forms. This could include traditionalscripted filmmaking, serialized content, short-format videos,social media, or any other media that engages in creativecommunication.
- Strong communication andpresentation skills for delivering engaging and dynamiccourses
- Appropriate experience in teaching anddeveloping curriculum at a tertiary level, following establishedpedagogical approaches.
- Ability to activelyengage in both practical and theoretical aspects ofcinematography
- A collaborative andinterdisciplinary approach to work effectively withcolleagues
- A track record and enthusiasm forresearch in these fields, including forms of publication such asconference papers, journal articles, screenings, orexhibitions.
ADM offers astudio-based professional education in a comprehensive universitysetting, and offers two BFA programs: Media Art (withspecializations in Film, Animation, Games, and Photography) andDesign Art (with specializations in Interactive Design, VisualCommunication, and Product Design). ADM also offers MA and PhDprograms by research across all areas of theschool.
The successful applicant should have astrong professional background in digital filmmaking anduniversity-level teaching experience, including mentoring finalstudent projects or theses. A strong international reputation,significant exhibition or publishing record, and a terminal degree(MFA or PhD) are preferred, or exceptional professionalexperience.
The candidate must demonstrate thepotential to bring international visibility to the school throughhigh-quality academic scholarship and/or impactful creativeactivity. Tenure-track hires are expected to pursue activities thatwill position them as well-known experts in theirfield.
The school expects a variety of serviceduties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate andgraduate students; school and university committee service; andcommunity engagement. The university provides many opportunitiesfor funded faculty research and excellent facilities for studioproduction.
