Introduction to The Centre for Precision Fermentation and Sustainability:

The Centre for Precision Fermentation and Sustainability (PreFerS) is a research program hosted by the Illinois Advanced Research Center at Singapore Ltd. (Illinois ARCS). The program aims to develop advanced fundamental sciences and technologies to implement fermentation-based production of foods and food ingredients, and also to enhance food security and sustainability in Singapore, particularly addressing the micronutrient food insecurity through precision fermentation.

About This Role:

As the (Assistant) Lab Manager at Illinois ARCS, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of our research laboratories. You will be responsible for ensuring the efficient functioning of lab facilities, managing resources, and promoting a culture of safety, collaboration, and excellence. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research initiatives and support the development of transformative technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Facilities Management:

· Oversee the day-to-day operations of laboratory facilities, including maintenance of equipment, cleanliness, organization and inventory management.

· Conduct regular inspections and audits of lab facilities to ensure all laboratory activities comply with safety protocols and regulations, including handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Equipment Maintenance:

· Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOP) to optimize lab workflows, enhance efficiency and ensure quality control.

· Establish and manage maintenance schedules, troubleshoot equipment issues, and facilitate repairs to ensure uninterrupted functionality.

· Serve as a liaison with external vendors, service providers, and regulatory agencies to facilitate equipment servicing, repairs and compliance-related matters.

Inventory Management:

· Maintain inventory records and coordinate the procurement of laboratory supplies, consumables, and equipment as needed to support research activities, adhering to budgetary constraints and project timelines.

Budget Planning:

· Assist in the development and management of laboratory budgets, which includes forecasting expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Training and Supervision:

· Train and mentor laboratory personnel on proper laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and use of specialized equipment.

Collaboration:

· Foster collaboration and communication among researchers, scientists, faculty and staff to support their experimental needs and facilitate the execution of research projects.

Documentation and Reporting:

· Keep precise records of laboratory operations, such as equipment manuals, safety protocols, and inventory documentation.
Produce necessary reports and documentation as required for regulatory and funding agency requirements.

Continuous Improvement:

· Stay abreast of advancements in laboratory technology, instrumentation, and best practices, and recommend innovative solutions to enhance research capabilities.

· Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes related to the expansion and improvement of lab infrastructure and capabilities.

Research and Development:

· Lead a research project within the PreFerS programme.

Qualifications:

· Degree in a relevant field (e.g., science, engineering, or related discipline). Advanced degree is preferred.

· Prior experience in laboratory management or a related role, preferably in an academic or research environment.

· Strong leadership abilities with a demonstrated track record of effectively managing teams and fostering a culture of collaboration, safety and excellence.

· In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, procurement process, inventory management, budget management and safety protocols.

· Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance standards governing laboratory operations (e.g., bio safety, chemical safety, radiation safety).

· Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.

· Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to prioritize tasks, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

· Proficiency in using laboratory instrumentation, data analysis software and computer applications for record-keeping and documentation.
