Position Responsibilities:
  • Conducts all operations following standard operating procedures specific to the camp location as directed by the Project Manager and Field Area Leadership.
  • Directs the field science program in collaboration with the Continental Field Supervisor and Principal Investigators (and/or field team leads).
  • Supervises camp staff and conducts end of season evaluations on camp personnel in partnership with the Continental Field Supervisor.
  • Serves as safety coordinator, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations. Reports safety incidents and near misses using ASC reporting protocols.
  • Maintains and operates camp facilities and equipment safely. Ensures camp cleanliness and proper waste disposal throughout the season.
  • Assigns daily equipment support, materials, and science support priorities based on the season plan.
  • Assists in selecting camp staff during the off-season if deemed appropriate, and engages in off-season planning as necessary.
  • Prepares cargo for transportation to the field, completes load plans, and prioritizes cargo with the Continental Field Supervisor and Fixed Wing or Helicopter coordinators before deployment.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, providing necessary information for job success through various means.
  • Maintains detailed records of camp operations, including fuel usage, camp population, flight details, weather observations, and emergency responses.
  • Generates end of season reports following SOP guidelines.
  • Implements USAP's safety, environmental, and health programs.
  • Assists in required search and rescue missions as directed by Field Area Leadership and the Emergency Operations Center.
  • Engages with National Science Foundation and other agency officials in a professional manner via phone or in-person interactions.
  • Ensures a safe workplace program is in place and prioritizes safety in the work environment.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Four years of relevant experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of four years combined experience in various areas such as weather reporting, equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, camp construction, and more.
  • Two years of supervisory or leadership experience required.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications.
Expected Skills and Competencies:
  • Demonstrated ability to work and supervise in remote and isolated environments.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, computer literacy, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred:
  • Four seasons of experience working in Arctic/Antarctica with direct exposure to polar field camp operations.
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations.
  • Passing drug screening and background checks.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy items as required by the position.
  • Engagement in community programs such as chores, cleaning, and safety initiatives.
  • US Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization.
