About the role
We are looking for Principal Advisor - Corporate Affairs in Japan. The role will enhance Rio Tinto's awareness and reputation in Japan across the breadth of corporate affairs activities.

Reporting to General Manager Corporate Affairs & Corporate Functions, North East Asia (based in Tokyo), you will;

  • Develop and maintains a favourable relationship with key Japanese media and facilitate media engagement by Rio Tinto Executives and senior leaders
  • Develop Rio Tinto narratives and pitch the story to key media
  • Deliver corporate and local announcements and positioning through the writing and editing of press releases in Japanese and English
  • Write speeches, digital content, etc., in Japanese and English
  • Support GM Corporate Affairs in developing communications and media strategies that will deliver effective reputational outcomes
  • Support to effectively leveraging Japan communications channels including website, social media channels, Yammer
  • Support to develop and implement a branding campaign for Rio Tinto in Japan, including production of brand and corporate communications materials for Japan, ensuring effective management of the Rio Tinto brand
  • Support the identification, design and delivery of Rio Tinto external events and reputation‐building activities in Japan, including the annual CEO Japan Market Visit and other visits by Rio Tinto Group executives
  • Support External Affairs team in developing Stakeholder Engagement and Government Relations
  • Support the adaptation of Rio Tinto Group global policies and initiatives for Japan and their deployment to the Rio Tinto Japan employees
  • Model behaviours and the Rio Tinto Values at all times as an ambassador for strong employee engagement across the business
  • Lead and develop the other members of the Corporate Affairs team

What you will need for the role

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • native level written and spoken Japanese and to a professional standard in English, with demonstrated ability to tailor communications for different channels and audiences
  • A creative mind, with the ability to bring our stories to life and strong copywriting skills across a range of styles including media releases, speeches, and social/digital contents
  • Strong strategic thinker with commercial acumen
  • Ability to manage issues effectively, and to work effectively in virtual and crosscultural teams
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly
  • Demonstrated highly collaborative behaviour and ability to derive value from the broader organisation through sharing knowledge, experience, resources and skills
  • Proven ability in interpersonal skills, including a high level of discretion and diplomacy and the ability to develop and "sell" ideas to senior leaders
  • Experience in developing and executing communications strategies

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • At least five years' experience in internal/external communications role within a large, geographically dispersed or diverse global company, preferably in the mining resources industry.

Where you will be working
Rio Tinto Japan is the Rio Tinto Group's representative office in Tokyo. We have had a presence on the ground in Japan for over 55 years, and leverage our knowledge, expertise and networks to support the sales and marketing of the Group's products from global operations to our Japanese customers; the procurement of mining machinery and equipment from Japanese suppliers for use in the Group's

global operations; and the development of new business and partnership opportunities for the Group with Japanese stakeholders.

In addition to our Commercial teams and the Corporate Affairs team, Rio Tinto Japan office also provides corporate support functions such as Finance, HR, and HSE.
