Job TitleGeneral Manager (Operations) for a leading A1 contractor in Singapore
Role SummaryThe General Manager (Operations) is a senior executive responsible for the entire operational oversight and performance of construction projects. The role involves strategic planning, team leadership, financial management, and ensuring project delivery meets client and regulatory standards. The incumbent reports to the Managing Director and should possess strong organisational and communication skills to lead day-to-day operations aligned with overall business goals.
Key focus areas include:
- A) Providing guidance and input to the team on the marketing plan for potential job opportunities, tender, execution and completion of all projects to meet budget and timeline.
- B) Collaborating with the General Manager of Engineering, MEP, Commercial, Contracts and Finance & Administration divisions to streamline and optimise operational processes for efficiency and productivity.
- C) Working with the Corporate Planning Team to develop and implement the company\'s strategic plan to achieve long-term and short-term goals and targets.
- Strategic Planning and Leadership
- Strategic direction: Develop and execute short- and long-term operational strategies with upper management and corporate planning teams to achieve business goals.
- Performance monitoring: Oversee overall business and operational performance by tracking KPIs and implementing continuous improvement strategies.
- Team management: Provide leadership to project managers, engineers, and site teams; recruit, train, and develop talent to sustain a high-performance culture.
- Project Oversight and Management
- End-to-end execution: Oversee full lifecycle of multiple construction projects from tender to handover, ensuring on-time delivery, within budget, and quality standards.
- Tender and costing: Guide tender opportunities, review project specs and BOQs, and finalise tender pricing with commercial teams.
- Resource allocation: Manage resources (human capital, equipment, materials) for optimal project execution.
- Quality control: Implement QA measures and conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with project requirements and techniques.
- Financial and Commercial Management
- Budgeting and forecasting: Manage project and operational budgets, control costs, and provide regular financial updates to senior management.
- Contractual oversight: Manage contractual matters, change orders, and resolve issues with main contractors or subcontractors.
- Procurement: Oversee procurement processes, including negotiating contracts for favorable pricing and timely delivery.
- Stakeholder Relations and Regulatory Compliance
- Stakeholder engagement: Build and maintain relationships with clients, architects, government authorities, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Safety standards: Ensure compliance with local regulations, workplace safety, and health standards on construction sites.
- Risk management: Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to prevent delays or issues.
- Experience: Over 20 years of practical experience managing significant projects and senior management roles, including 10 years in building project construction management with main contractors at a senior level.
- Education: Bachelor\'s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; relevant professional certifications may be required.
- Technical knowledge: Strong knowledge of the entire construction process, including project costing, contracts, and regulatory requirements in Singapore.
- Soft skills: Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
- Attributes: Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
