Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering (Singapore) COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Learning, Teaching and Scholarship track Grade 7 Competitive Salary Job Purpose Full‑time position in Singapore to deliver teaching on the BEng degree programme in Mechanical Engineering offered jointly by the University of Glasgow (through the University of Glasgow Singapore (UGS)) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT); to engage in scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in order to contribute to the advancement of the discipline and/or its teaching practice at course, degree programme, school, institution and profession and national levels; to undertake administrative and management tasks associated with University of Glasgow Singapore activities. The required area of expertise for this position is in aeronautics and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with knowledge of UAV design and system integration, aircraft performance and propulsion, guidance, and navigation for UAVs. Additionally, knowledge in computational aerodynamics is desired. UGS is a subsidiary of the University of Glasgow that works in partnership with SIT. Its mission is to: Deliver in‑country undergraduate Honours degree programmes to the same high standard as those of University of Glasgow in the UK for a high quality education that equips students for a lifetime career as leaders in industry and commerce. Provide PhD and professional development training in support of industry in Singapore. Develop research and development collaboration with industry and other organisations in Singapore. Engage with the SoTL research community in Singapore and develop links with SoTL research groups on the Glasgow campus. Establish and promote its multidisciplinary research portfolio in an international context and fully engage with societal changes as identified by major international funding bodies. This post is based at the SIT Punggol campus in Singapore and from time to time, you may be required to work at a different campus. There may be a requirement to visit the UK for induction and personal development activities as appropriate. Note : This job description is for the ‘Learning, Teaching and Scholarship’ track. Main Duties and Responsibilities Take a leading role in the planning, organisation, development, delivery and assessment of undergraduate teaching activities in mechanical engineering within UGS, including the development of online courses, in a manner that supports an enhanced student learning experience. Collaborate with colleagues at the University of Glasgow and SIT to ensure coherent delivery of the degree programmes at UGS. Participate fully in assessment and examination processes using a variety of methods, as appropriate, and provide feedback to students that is relevant, timely and supports learning. Supervise and oversee individual student projects. Contribute as appropriate to the Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP) taught at the Glasgow campus during the summer. Engagement in scholarship: attendance and participation in seminars / conferences within subject area and in relation to teaching practice, ensuring that teaching practices are of the highest standard relative to international best practices. Work with colleagues in Glasgow and Singapore to develop joint teaching and learning projects and to secure the funding required to underpin the long‐term growth of teaching and learning innovation. Disseminate scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) through publications in journals and presentations at national and international conferences, enhancing the reputation of the University of Glasgow Singapore. Engage in professional development activities as appropriate and in external academic and professional activities to enhance the reputation of the University of Glasgow Singapore. Contribute to the administrative and management duties of the University of Glasgow Singapore, as allocated by the UGS Director and/or the UGS Mechanical Engineering Programme Director. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge / Qualifications Essential: A1 A good Honours degree in a relevant discipline. A2 PhD, or the equivalent professional qualifications and experience in mechanical engineering with previous personal development in a similar or related role(s). A3 Comprehensive and up‑to‑date knowledge of developments in teaching, learning and assessment practices. A4 Experience in teaching in the areas of expertise listed above and/or related subject areas. A5 Evidence of innovation in teaching methods. A6 Willingness to work in Singapore to deliver this role, subject to working and residency permissions. Skills Essential: C1 Proven track‑record of effective teaching at undergraduate and/or taught postgraduate level. C2 Excellent team leadership skills including demonstrable supervisory skills. C3 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills. C4 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach. C5 Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in appropriate range of contexts. C6 Strong problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach. Desirable: D1 Experience and specialist knowledge in innovative approaches to assessment and feedback in HE. Experience Essential: E1 A demonstrable, excellent teaching track record. E2 Experience of developing and maintaining innovative teaching practices. E3 Experience in designing and developing undergraduate and/or postgraduate taught courses. E4 An excellent track record of performing administrative duties in a HE institution. E5 Track record of student supervision. Job Features 1. Undertake teaching in accordance with the University of Glasgow Singapore workload. 2. Organise and mark student assessments (coursework and examinations). 3. Supervise and assess individual student projects. 4. In collaboration with colleagues, develop plans for SoTL and submit appropriate grant proposals. 5. Publication of papers in relevant leading international journals and presentations at conferences. 6. Administrative tasks as assigned by the UGS Director and/or UGS Mechanical Engineering Programme Director. Planning and Organising 1. Weekly/monthly/annually – planning and preparation of taught courses. 2. Weekly/monthly – SoTL activities of self or research staff. 3. Weekly/monthly – online course development of taught courses. 4. Monthly/annually – SoTL grant application writing and submission with colleagues. 5. Plan and organise administrative duties on an ongoing basis. 6. Reactive – daily queries from students/staff. 7. Effective organisational skills to manage time and to prioritise appropriately teaching, online course development, SoTL and administrative duties. Decision Making 1. Manage curricula, intended learning outcomes, course content and assessment methods for undergraduate courses. 2. Plan grant submissions supporting inquiry on teaching and learning, including development of collaborative activities. 3. Choice of journals, conferences and other media for dissemination of SoTL outcomes. 4. Prioritise own work. 5. External involvement including collaborations, refereeing applications and papers, journal editorships. Internal/External Relationships Internal 1. UGS Director and/or UGS Mechanical Engineering Programme Director for exchange of information, learning and teaching strategy and research strategy. 2. Academic colleagues for information exchange to facilitate teaching and learning innovation. 3. Undergraduate students – to enhance student learning. 4. Administrative staff within both UGS and SIT for exchange of information relating to student progress and support, and etc. External 6. Staff at SIT for information exchange to facilitate effective teaching and to support students. 7. Academics at other universities or organisations to develop and maintain national and international collaborations. 8. Funding bodies and industry to maximise potential for funding scholarship and teaching innovation. 9. Scientific, educational or professional organisations to maintain external links and undertake professional activities. Problem Solving 1. Act as a first point of contact for problems/enquiries from undergraduate on issues relating to taught courses and individual projects. 2. Academic research, experimental design and associated problem solving.
