About the role
The Head of English Language Support will be responsible for the foundation and overall leadership of the EAL, PCP Primary, and PCP Secondary programmes, with the aim that pupils develop English language skills and access the English National curriculum. The successful candidate will promote a caring and happy atmosphere throughout the EAL, PCP and PCS programmes, focusing on three pillars: curiosity, confidence and kindness. He or she is expected to recruit and lead a team of outstanding teachers and teaching assistants who buy into this ethos, and to manage department resources to provide effective learning opportunities for pupils.
What you will be doing
Leadership- To lead and manage the day-to-day operation of the intensive programme for pupils with beginner-level English proficiency (Preparatory Course for Primary & Secondary) and the less intensive EAL programme for pupils with intermediate English proficiency.
- To support the Head of College in delivering the vision for Brighton College Singapore and be a positive, productive and supportive member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- To line manage, mentor and coach the Leads of both programmes.
- To be responsible for the effective performance of all EAL teachers and teaching assistants via proactive staff development.
- To provide strategic direction, vision and quality assurance for Whole School EAL provisions.
- To demonstrate financial acuity in budget management and ensure effective deployment of resources.
- To work with the Heads of Marketing and Admissions and the Head of College when recruiting pupils for the EAL & PCP Programmes.
- With the teaching team, to develop events to attract new pupils to the school.
- To attend marketing and admissions events as required by the Head of College.
- To liaise with Admissions to identify EAL needs prior to entry and assess prospective pupils, providing appropriate parental feedback as necessary.
- To explore, design and deliver EAL provisions that may increase pupil recruitment and revenue.
- To develop, with the Senior Leadership Team and Team Leads, the curriculum for all subject areas taught in the PCP, PCS and EAL Programmes, ensuring staff are led to maintain outstanding standards.
- To evaluate curriculum effectiveness and ensure an appropriate system of assessment and record keeping.
- To implement Individual Development Plans for pupils significantly below their age-appropriate English levels.
- To oversee academic progress of pupils from beginner to intermediate to proficient English levels.
- To oversee pastoral welfare of pupils in both programmes.
- To provide a co-curricular programme for PCP pupils (if applicable).
- Ensure teachers understand pupils' EAL needs and can plan lessons accordingly.
- Through the CPD programme, provide INSET and opportunities for staff to share and improve practice.
- To maintain and develop effective relationships with current and prospective parents.
- To report to the Head of College and Head of Prep School on EAL matters.
- To participate in consultative procedures to ensure effective communication across departments.
- To meet with prospective parents to explain aims, ethos, teaching methods, facilities and pupil progress of EAL/PCP.
- To encourage parent involvement and foster good home-school connections.
- To ensure families are informed of pupil progress via meetings and reporting cycles.
- To report to Governors and attend meetings as required.
- To liaise with the School Nurse, Operations Director, Catering Team and local partners as needed.
- Publish and review the EAL policy and procedures and run parent workshops on EAL support and language development.
- Guide staff in communicating with parents and the wider community about EAL provisions and practices.
- Ensure staff support the Inclusion team and maintain effective working relationships.
- Manage the Department's budget and timetable planning for a balanced curriculum.
- Recruit and appoint new staff in consultation with the Head of College.
- Attend parents' evenings, school functions, and staff/curriculum meetings as required.
- Lead whole school assemblies on occasion and participate in the appraisal process.
- Maintain up-to-date Parent Handbook and coordinate annual reviews for families.
- Note: This is not an exhaustive list; additional duties may be requested by the Head of College.
Who we are looking for
- At least five years' teaching experience in a similar capacity or as an experienced subject leader; knowledge of an outstanding EAL provision is essential.
- A university degree and teaching qualification from a recognised institution.
- Essential qualities: positive team player; warm, engaging and approachable with pupils and parents; determination; strategic thinker; ability to lead an outstanding team; resilience and adaptability; ability to inspire children and staff.
