**Duties**:

- As a coder, performs a variety of technically complex duties to review and analyze ambulatory/inpatient medical data, code medical diagnoses and procedures, and provides assistance to the professional staff.
- Codes disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory/inpatient settings and specialties.
- Perform audits of coded records and provides direct feedback to coders.
- Determines that diagnostic and procedural terminology used is consistent with currently acceptable medical nomenclature.
- Selection of the appropriate codes and modifiers requires determining from several possible codes and references the one which most accurately describes the proper primary and subsequent diagnosis.

- **Specialized Experience**: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes; coding medical diagnosis; and use various data systems to assign codes and retrieve data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
- **Education**: Successfully completed four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
- **OR**

**Combination of Education and Experience**:A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
