Digital Journalist

**Job Introduction**:The BBC News website is one of the world’s largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions for different geographic audiences, and UK-facing and International-facing apps. The Social News team is an integral part of the Mobile and Online division, managing core social media output and supporting wider news operations.

This role is based in Singapore, home to the BBC News website’s Asia edition - which comprises an Asia News front page and social platforms specially curated for the region. Journalists in the team write and shape the website’s international news coverage and help set our daily agenda. They are also responsible for helping to build the reach and reputation of our digital services.

**Role Responsibility
- A proven track record in covering Asian and Global News as well as good editorial judgement.
- Understanding of how social media works, especially Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well as other platforms popular in Asia.
- The ability to identify shareable content; create, package and sell it on social media.
- Strong writing skills to generate accurate copy with precise attribution, paired with strong visual skills to help promote our material in the most effective way.
- The ability to respond to the audience in a way that reflects the BBC News brand and expectations of different social media platforms.
- An understanding of the competitive environment for breaking news and how the real time news cycle develops on social media.
- Fluency in a regional language.

**Key responsibilities and accountabilities**:

- Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
- May be required to present the content on radio, TV or on line. This might be live or recorded.

- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
- To undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. Use a range of video, audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
- To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld
- Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate
- To tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve
- To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines staffing and resources available
- To produce engaging packages through a range of production skills
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC Health and Safety policy Knowledge, skills, training and experience Essential Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques
- Demonstrates sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage, the programme departments and the audience
- Ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.

**Job Purpose**:

- The Singapore social media producer is responsible for handling the main BBC social news accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as BBC News accounts on Line, Weibo and Reddit
- You will work closely with Asia Online team members as well as with the Social News team, which is headquartered in London
- You will identify and create highly shareable BBC News content and compose posts, including pictures or video, to drive high levels of engagement, and referral back to BBC News output
- You will be expected to have a wide-ranging knowledge of international affairs and an understanding of what kinds of stories appeal to Asian, UK and international audiences
- As the role is fully integrated into newsroom operations, you will be part of the breaking news operation and help identify user generated content of value, and other types of newsworthy material being distributed on social media.
- You will engage with audiences and identify appropriate ways of involving and responding to the audience (fans and followers) around content published to our social media channels is crucial
- You will use data to drive tactical decisions about the type, format and timing of content posted, as well as in tracking how our content performs
- You will be expected to spot and surface stories from social in Asia and might be required to write or present
