Digital Journalist

**Key responsibilities and accountabilities**
- Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.

- Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
- To tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.
- To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
- To produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.

**Additional job specific responsibilities and accountabilities**

The BBC News website is one of the world’s largest and most popular news sites. It has mobile and desktop editions for different geographic audiences, and UK-facing and International-facing apps. Digital teams work closely with other BBC platforms and services to showcase the best journalism from across the BBC.

The BBC News digital team in Asia produce a bespoke front page for web and mobile, specially curated for audiences in the region. It includes pages for Asia, China, India and Australia. Content produced by the website’s Asian teams is used across all other editions of the BBC News website and on the BBC homepages.

**JOB PURPOSE**

To work on the Singapore-based Asia desk for BBC News Online primarily in text but also - as required - in video and audio. The journalist is expected to write and produce news, explainers, features and social-friendly takes on stories from around Asia.

**PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Day-to-day reporting on Asian and global news events and issues
- Coming up with new and imaginative angles on major stories
- Devising creative ways of telling stories on our digital platforms
- Maintaining knowledge of the region and contacts
- Navigating social media platforms to source stories and perspectives
- Willingness to work across a range of skills to BBC standards and values

**SKILLS & ABILITIES**

Excellent writing skills and the ability to produce clean, clear news stories under the tightest of deadlines

Central to the role is the ability to think up imaginative and innovative ways of presenting stories for our digital platforms

Social media expertise with experience of social newsgathering from the wide variety of platforms popular across Asia

A clear sense of how to integrate social media, video and graphics into our coverage and an understanding of how mobile devices are transforming storytelling

An understanding of and experience with audience engagement and analytics

Broad knowledge of and interest in global and Asian news and themes, and a track record of reporting in Asian nations

Ability to produce accessible and thought-provoking features which demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues

Fluency in a regional language is an advantage

Ability to acquire technical skills and operate seamlessly across a number of platforms is an advantage

An understanding of what makes good digital video and experience in producing such video is a strong advantage
