Senior Underwriter

**The Role**

This is a relatively unique role and it would suit an Senior underwriter who is looking to do something a little bit different with their career, bringing together their aptitude for medical research and underwriting expertise to be used in a technical actuarial setting. The individual we are looking for would need to be curious, interested in ‘digging deep’ into medical research across different Asia territories, self-motivated, and ideally with some sort of medical background. Their time would be split, broadly 60/40 between the Research & Development (R&D) actuarial team and the Underwriting team. The individual would therefore report into the Director, R&D in Asia but also have a strong dotted line to a Director in the Underwriting & Claims department.

R&D requirements of the role

On the R&D side, the role is to support the delivery of the company’s actuarial bases for the Asia business unit, with a **strong focus on medical research for the purposes of Terms of Trade (“TOT”) development **.

The R&D team is the actuarial team responsible for leading the development of Terms of Trade across all our lines of business and territories within Asia (i.e. South East Asia, Korea & Japan, and China). This covers the standard assumptions used for pricing and the valuation of in force business. They are also responsible for analysing experience on existing treaties and for calibrating risk distribution functions for economic capital purposes.

The individual will not be expected to perform actuarial functions but should have a strong interest in using medical research for the purposes of adapting previous actuarial best estimate incidence rates, or advising on the formation of new rates, where the actuaries lack policyholder experience data. As well as working closely with the R&D team, the individual will spend the other half their time with the Underwriting & Claims team and will also have the opportunity to work with a variety of other experts, including medical personnel, Medical Analytics (actuarial team), Pricing and Marketing teams.

Underwriting requirements of the role

The role of the Senior Underwriting and Claims Professional would consist of carrying out risk assessments on mortality and morbidity, claim data analysis, underwriting initiatives and client initiatives across Asia.

Having a dotted line to one of the Directors in Underwriting & Claim would support this individual in these initiative and also allow the individual to work closely alongside the Product Development, Pricing and Marketing teams.

**Description**

1. (20%) Work closely with internal stakeholders and external experts, as well as carry out independent medical research to obtain medical evidence and use them in a tangible manner to assess insurance risks and build best estimate rates particularly where robust data is lacking

2. (20%) Support the development and maintenance of the Business Unit’s Terms of Trade through medical research and an understanding of the distribution and risk landscape in the markets that we operate in

3. (20%) Responsible for providing highly qualified opinions, market insight and expertise on Underwriting and Claims work in a timely manner:

- involvement in Underwriting and Claims projects such as risky benefit analyses and claim analyses;
- involvement with clients to ensure adherence to sound risk principles through proactive business management, e.g. client practice reviews, audit, due diligence, market surveys and individual underwriting and claims assessments including preparation, execution and reporting;
- staying abreast of developments in the Asian insurance and reinsurance markets, including local regulations insofar as they affect underwriting and claims, competitive pressures, and new initiatives.

4. (20%) Full involvement in the underwriting and claims aspect by providing expert opinion for quotes and product development:

- bring a qualified underwriting assessment for mortality, critical illness and morbidity;
- use expert knowledge and experience to develop innovative ideas and product concepts for our current and potential market proposition development;
- provide market insight, clinical medical practice and regulation change advice, which can impact on underwriting and claims

5. (15%) Ad hoc research projects, for internal research priorities and occasionally involving presentations to clients and external parties. This will also include providing support to the life reinsurance quoting process in addition to supporting the pricing team in setting key pricing bases for new products or market initiatives via medical research

6. (5%) Support the experience analysis and basis setting for current in force treaties by contributing medical research and expertise where required
