Senior Underwriter, Liability

Job Purpose

As a Senior Casualty Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in managing and underwriting a portfolio of casualty risks, ensuring profitable growth while maintaining compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. You will provide technical expertise, mentor junior underwriters, and build strong relationships with brokers and clients to achieve strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities
- Underwriting and Risk Assessment
- Evaluate and underwrite casualty risks, including general liability, employers’ liability, and public liability, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
- Assess the acceptability of risks by analyzing financials, loss history, industry trends, and legal environments.
- Price risks using actuarial models, rating tools, and market data to ensure profitability.
- Develop customized insurance solutions for complex or high-value accounts.
- Portfolio Management
- Monitor the performance of the casualty portfolio and take corrective actions to maintain profitability.
- Collaborate with referrals, pricing and reserving actuaries, claims teams, and risk engineers to assess portfolio trends and optimize underwriting strategies.
- Prepare regular reports on underwriting performance, risk exposures, and market trends.

Business Development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and key clients to drive new business and renewals.
- Participate in client and broker meetings to present underwriting capabilities and solutions.
- Identify market opportunities and develop strategies to capture profitable business.

Leadership and Mentoring
- Provide guidance and training to junior underwriters, enhancing their technical skills and decision-making abilities.
- Act as a technical resource for complex cases, ensuring alignment with company standards.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning within the underwriting team.

Regulatory and Compliance
- Ensure underwriting practices comply with internal guidelines, frameworks, legal requirements, and industry regulations.
- Stay updated on changes in regulations, laws, and industry practices affecting casualty insurance.

Educational Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field
- Professional certifications preferred such as ACII, or CPCU are advantageous.

Experience
- At least 5-8 years of experience in casualty underwriting, with a proven track record in managing complex accounts.
- Strong knowledge of casualty lines, including general liability, employers’ liability, product liability, and umbrella policies.

Technical Skills
- Proficiency in underwriting tools, pricing models, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Solid understanding of legal, regulatory, and market developments in casualty insurance.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.

Soft Skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
- Leadership qualities with the ability to mentor and inspire a team.
